Just a thought

I don't really like to say I am scared of things or that something truly bothers me, but there are a few reasons why, no matter how tired I am, I have to get up and lock the door or check that it is locked. I suppose that when I am sleeping, I am at my most vulnerable because who knows if I will wake up to handle a threat in time or even at all.

I remember watching a show where they did interviews with killers in jail, and one really stood out to me. For the most part, these crimes are often committed by people you know and very rarely by someone random, but these two individuals just set out to rob a guy of his stash, be it drugs or money. They had intel that this dude had some stuff they wanted to take. They went late at night and snuck around while everyone was asleep. They didn't find anything and just decided, while they were there, to murder everyone in the house. I believe the people who were murdered were two adult men and one child. They basically smashed in their faces with an axe as they were sleeping, and they did it without any real motivation or reason to do so.

Something about the nature of that crime and their human hearts really stands out to me. It wasn't planned to murder them. They didn't set out thinking or discussing that they were going to kill anyone. It was just spontaneous, without any real triggers to do it. Now I don't go around living in fear of people or thinking this is the norm or even that there is a high chance this will happen to me, but it is enough that I am going to lock my doors at night.

Every night before going to bed I check every lock in the house and close all the blinds. Safety should always come first. Also as the sun sets that's when I first close and lock doors. Since we watch TV in the back of the house I will leave the rear doors open in the winter to let a little cool air in. In Southerner Florida it is usually too hot during the day to leave doors open.

@Musicman might be a gator or a snake come to say hello if you keep the doors open there.

@Rokan Fortunately the entire back of the house is screened in so that won't happen.
