One person's weed.. One of my favorite wild seasonings

Does anybody else use the berries from their sumac bushes?

Every fall, I harvest the berry clusters, dry them, and crush them into a coarse seasoning. It has this really nice lemony flavor that's great on grilled meats and roasted vegetables.

I keep several bushes in my yard. Some think of them as roadside weeds lol i see a free spice rack. 😄

Just to be clear, please don't go out and dry every sumac you see.

Make sure you know you have one of the edible varieties. Not all sumac is created equal, and some types are poisonous and can make you sick.

(And yes... the second picture is just because the scale has been very kind to me this week, and I'm feeling pretty happy about it.)

@Bexsy I really should pick some this year, it is all over the upper Midwest.
Do you forage in general?

Interesting, I did not know about that and it's berries.

My sister made a drink from them one time, looked and tasted like pink lemonade. It was a Cherokee recipe. Ground up sumac berries are used to season beef kebabs in Persian restaurants, adds a pleasant flavor to them.
@cherokeepatti i didn't know that. I do know it is very favorable

@Bexsy I’ve purchased some at an international food store, it was Sadaf brand. It is rich in vitamin C and has several health benefits.

Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
@Bexsy You know me too well. But let me say this about that—my peach tree has a lot of fruit this year! And that’s not a weird euphemism in this particular case.
@Harmonium1923 peach cobbler???!!
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
@Bexsy Yes! And peach pie!
WasEP · 51-55, M
Never tried it, probably never will, unless you mail me some!
@WasEP it's in the mail lol
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
not real common here, never used it.

I do use juniper berries though on occasion for seasoning, rubs, etc. (also for for homemade mead, wine, etc.)
MethDozer · M
Pick the berries to make mock lemonade. Iys pretty good.

A lot of people around here assume sumac is poionous because poison sumac is common arojnd tbe swamps. It's white berries are easy to distinguish though
@MethDozer very easy.

You're second person to say lemonade. I'll try it
