Today I finally learned

why, on Star Trek: The Next Generation, they switched the uniform colors. On the original series, people in Command wore gold shirts, people in Science wore blue and people in operations (engineering, security, etc.) wore red.

When performing color tests for Next Generation, however, they found that the makeup and contact lens Brent Spiner wore as Data reflected red terribly, and he looked like a zombie in blue. Also, the red complimented Patrick Stewart better than the gold. So, they switched.

I thought the red shirts is because it doesn't show blood so easily, as they die so often...

@basilfawlty89 That was the original series, and I don't think they ever showed any blood on that.
