What does it mean when someone has to post selfies of them doing every little thing on social media?

I’m not sure if they are: shallow, self centered, manipulative (marketing themselves to climb a social ladder), or if they are missing some type of balance in their own life. Need to feel famous, trying to make money? Just trying to connect with others, dedicated and using it as a historical journal? Have other friends who do the same, it was supposed to be fun, to share photos, but when I realized others used it for way off track gossip I quit that. I still take pictures but I keep them to share with family and very close friends.
