I Have Random Thoughts Of Randomness
I just picked up my car from the shop, just over $1,000 to do a variety of work that was mostly just regular preventative maintenance before winter.
I take my car to a place near my house that has been very good to us over the years, helping out when we were really in a jam. They do good work and on that score I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
And yet....
When I took the car in a while back for something else, they did a general checkup, and I got a list of several bits of work they recommended doing, or doing sometime soon, at least. Nothing major, just basic maintenance. I picked out several things to have done today, primarily to get ready for winter. It's all good. I hate being upsold anytime, but I understand they have to generate income to keep the lifts going.
The customer service guy I've been dealing with called me earlier today and suggested getting the water pump replaced. There was nothing wrong, really, but there might be sometime in the next year, and while they're already in there....
$600. On top of the $1,000 I was already spending.
No. Can't quite afford that right now for something that isn't immediately essential.
OK. Sure. No problem.
CS guy calls me later to say the car is done. Oh, by the way, had I noticed the tire pressure light was blinking? Sure, had been for a while, and I knew it was because of a faulty sensor. I just couldn't justify another $150 to get that fixed. Sure, sure.
I'm not complaining. They do a good job and they're really convenient.
I just hate being upsold.
