I Have Random Thoughts

Interesting article on page 1 of the 12/27 NY times: the rate at which US high school diplomas are granted is increasing, but several college preparedness metrics are decreasing. What does that say about the rigor and effectiveness of US high schools? (and - NO - don't blame teachers; they are really constrained by the system).

High school should be a way to prepare people for a job anyway. It should not be a way to prepare people for college. College is a resource that should go to the smarter and more determined people in society.

It means high schools are churning out uneducated kids. And yes, teachers are partly to blame for that. The system too. The entire apparatus needs serious reform. Unfortunately, that won't happen.

California just enacted a law to eliminate all requirement to pass anything to get a high school graduation. Just show up (occasionally). It has no meaning.
