I'm a self loathing southerner.

I hate being southern, and I hate my accent and ashamed of being from the south that it makes me feel suicidal and don't wanna live anymore, people say i'm trolling but I'm being serious. According to everyone else, I'm just a worthless dumb hillbilly.

Being southern is nature's curse and a mistake, every time I travel to another state, I talk very slow and quietly so people don't recognize what state i'm from, I'm from Alabama and I'm ashamed of it, when someone asks where I'm from, I get tears in my eyes and cry, I'm ashamed of my Appalachian roots and southern roots when I look in the mirror and see my high cheekbones I see a hillbilly mountain person face and a redneck face. Just venting and getting this out of my chest.

Read some Lewis Grizzard, and you'll be cured!
"There is no such thing as being too Southern"

Here's some more Grizzard quotes:

@helenS I have both of those and a half dozen others. I recommend “Don’t sit under the grits tree with anyone else but me” and “If I ever get back to Georgia I’m gonna nail my feet to the ground”

@TAReturns I nailed my feet to ground when I got back to my homeland too!

@helenS If you only nailed one then you'd spend your life going round in circles. 😺

I rather like the south and the cats are super friendly

You are you. The universe placed you in the South. It does NOT define all that you are or will be.
I’m sorry you feel this way.

Go to a speech therapist, get plastic therapy, legally change your name, and leave your past behind you.

If you are feeling suicidal about anything at all I beg you to seek therapy or psychiatric treatment asap. Please.
As for being Southern and Appalachian, that is a great heritage. I am guessing what makes you ashamed is how intertwined it is with racism, and/or the stereotypes of dumb "hillbillies" and "rednecks". But people from other parts of the world (including here in Canada) look to your part of the world with such admiration of the music that comes from there, and the traditions of folklore and storytelling, and we are inspired. Every place and culture has its flaws but also its glories. May you find ways to be proud of the riches of your heritage.

Sounds like you're going through a major self-identity crisis. I hope you can fight through it and find a piece of mind, somewhere.

I remember being in the Northeast US and a waitress said that she loved my accent

and I replied "Whut ack sennnnnt huney chile" :)

and grinned like a greased possum :)

I am from Viking roots. They stole and plundered and fought. I am a new creature in christ.
We should not be ashamed of where we came from but proud of where we are going! 🙂

This can't be real.
You have much bigger problems if your home state makes you feel suicidal. Thats ridiculous
