I have a very close friend who inherited lipidemia - a condition that causes weight to settle in the thighs and rear end, and to a lesser extent, in the lower legs. She has been married and widowed, had a long relationship with a man although she refused to marry him. It's pronounced. She looks like her lower half and upper half could have come from two different people. It's not something she can control. It just is. She's beautiful and cheerful and a terrific person. Anybody who can't see that, she's better off without them.
When all is said and done, yeah, the outside matters, but I'd far rather be with a guy who is overweight than a guy with an overblown opinion of himself.
