I don't like odd numbers of crockery and cutlery. If one piece from a set of 4, 6, or 8 breaks or goes missing, I always feel the need to buy a whole new set.
I'm not a hoarder.

It might be cost saving to always buy extremely plain clear glassware, and very plain white crockery. Cutlery is no problem if you always buy the same pattern.
That way you can set the table for any number and everything will still match.
