Dune 1984 version. You can't hear it, see it (due to the lighting) or even understand it. A disaster!
@Wol62 I actually found it to be more comprehensible than the current version but it DID suffer from a horrendous editing job. Some of the acting was a bit wooden but in actuality when all of the footage was restored by the Sci Fi channel some years back, it made much more sense and followed the book WAY closer than the current Villeneuve mess that is ripe with tangents that have zero to do with the story. I was quite excited to go see the Villeneuve version in the theater and took a friend who knew nothing about Dune. 1/2 way through he finally said, “I have no idea what is going on here. I’m totally lost.” And I, who had read the book (in fact all of them) couldn’t agree more.

@PatKirby The sets for this movie were killer. As you watch, check out the backgrounds of many of the interior scenes. They totally captured that feudal sci fi look. And sorry, old Dune’s Baron Harkonnen would have eaten the new Baron as an appetizer. My only serious critical comment about ‘84 Dune versus the book was the ending where Muad ‘Dib made it rain. Ehhhh, no. Kinda kills the point. Paul was a man posing as a god, not a god pretending to be a man. But beyond that? This flick to date captured the best of Herbert’s vision. After seeing Bladerunner 2049, I figured Villeneuve was gonna finally give Dune the justice it deserved. I was bitterly disappointed.

@Wol62

David Lynch. film ....... no wayzzz ....

it's a classic ,,,,,, and Sting is in. it as FEYD, and his uncle , Lynch got him spot on ...... only problem , it was too much book to put to one film ,,,,,too bad he didn't have more film to share, wonder if he did ? and Hollywood canned it....

I actually might try to and find it to rewatch,,

@BobbyMoeven Ha ha ok, I thought it was abysmal, worse than Conan the Barbarian....hang on, nothing could be that bad surely?

@Wol62

I actually like both ..... but I really appreciate bad acting, somewhat campy films tooo, so I am probably not the best person to rebound movies off. 😋
@Wol62 I will clarify it is not by any means a great movie. It was just truer to the book and made more sense once all the missing footage was put back into place. What I am seeing is that the newer incarnation of Dune also had about 40 minutes of footage that also had to be edited out due to time constraints. I’d be willing to check it out again if a directors cut was released.

@stratosranger Yeah, maybe the longer version might make more sense.
@BobbyMoeven The Sci Fi channel DID find the missing footage and aired all four hours of footage in order. The only thing that was missing was post production special effects in the missing footage. So in one scene Paul would have the blue in blue eyes and in the next he would not. Last I heard Lynch has said he will never release a directors cut and wants to forget the movie was ever made.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@stratosranger 4 hours? Wow, that is longgggggggggggggg...I take it you watched it all.
@Wol62 I did. I recorded it on VHS to cut through the commercials which dragged it all out into a 6 hour event. I unfortunately no longer have the tape.

@stratosranger I'm sorry, but it was better than the theatrical release huh?
@Wol62 It made more sense with the added footage. Lynch got cold feet in the middle of production and by the end the editing made it all the hatchet job that was released in cinemas. Was it better? Again, I think it was truer to Herbert’s vision but had subpar special FX and a director who wanted to just get outta town. I am hoping there will be a directors cut of the 2021 incarnation. If so, I would give it another try to see if that movie has a better flow as well.
