@Gloomy The minimum wage is not a joke. It serves a purpose.

You can't spend your life in minimum wage jobs. Their purpose is to help you get a better job. You can't make a living flipping burgers.

@HoraceGreenley Why the fuck don't people who flip burgers deserve to make a living?
Compare the wage of a MCDonalds employee in the US to europeans it's insane and deeply immoral
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Gloomy Because the purpose of that job is to take someone who is unemployable and give them the opportunity to get a better job.

The market doesn't support burger flippers making 6 figures.

You can pay $100 for a McDonald's burger but you'll have a hard time convincing someone else.

@HoraceGreenley Sounds like exploitation to me, and why should someone with no work experience not deserve a career?

@HoraceGreenley I would posit that if any job does not pay a living wage, then it should not be a job. If McDonald's cannot make affordable hamburgers while paying employees enough to make a basic living, then McDonalds probably shouldn't exist as a business. I do not think someone flipping burgers should make as much as say, a teacher. But they should be able to afford to eat and keep a roof over their head. Also, it's evidence of a broken system that critical roles such as teachers are paid so low while hedge fund managers and professional athletes make millions.

Personally, I view the solution for burger flipping as revisiting quality public housing without means testing as a way to create more options for affordable shelter. That competition would hopefully apply downward pressure on private rents and housing values as well. We need to moderate home ownership as an investment vehicle. Controlling for costs of living is another way to bring people into living wage territory without increasing minimum wages.
