Could somebody go to a bar just to order sodas or juice and not any alcohol or would that defeat the purpose of going to a bar?

Yes, I have done that. Not often, but yes.

I haven't drank in almost 13 years now, but I'll still go to a bar with friends and drink Diet Pepsi while they get fucked up. The point for me is to socialize.

I didnt drink alcohol when i went out barring/clubbing. Id only drink water or coffee.

The idea of going to a bar is to socialize! If all I want to do is get drunk, I’ll just buy a bottle and go home!

One could go for the socializing, but soda or juice would cost as much as a mixed drink. 5 or 6 bucks I would think, but it's been years since I've been out drinking.

Yeah, happens all the time. Alcohol is thier main sale though so depending on the time of say they might try to push it on you but if they serves food during the day its a restaurant.

Alcohol served in a bar is often referred to as "liquid courage". For some guys, not much would happen in their social life if they weren't half-juiced from booze.
