Would you be a restaurant dishwasher for $20 an hour?

Sure! Shucks, for $20 I'd even kiss your grandma.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@hunkalove Careful mate, she might not let you go...
royalblue1193 · 31-35, M
@hunkalove Maybe if they were still around...
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
That is higher than the minimum wage here so yes, I could do that job.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
One of my first jobs was that in like 1986 and I got I believe 3.50 an hour
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@JimboSaturn I took a job working the 4-12 shift at Arby’s and got paid 50 cents extra per hour and totally rubbed it in my friends faces
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@AthrillatheHunt I worked weekends at Dunkin Donuts.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@JimboSaturn obviously before the Indian takeover 😂
Yeah why not, work's work.
Ontheroad · M
Sure, if I needed the money I would. I worked in the sweltering heat on farms for much, much less when I was a youngster.
Ontheroad · M
@AthrillatheHunt exactly, we had to be because it was work or be broke, and the work available is what we took.

It was a different time in a different world. Many today have choices we didn't have. I will say it gave us older folks grit you don't see today - grit and confidence in ourselves.

That's what I see as being different - our life experiences made most of us "man up" early on.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@Ontheroad grit is the word that perfectly describes my generation (at least here in US).
Ontheroad · M
@AthrillatheHunt we had or got the grit in a different world. I don't blame them or look down on them because of that, but I do feel we have learned to weather the storms that life brings in a different way - grit is simply part of us.

I do think they have or are earning their grit, but it is again, a different type of grit.

I can remember my dad saying we (kids of the time) were soft. And compared to what men of his age had to live through, we were.

I think that's the way it works. The world changes and people change to face the challenges of their time.

Not necessarily for the better or worse, just different.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Sure. I`ve done worse jobs for less.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
I've driven a front end loader for far less. 🤷🏻‍♂
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
Nothing wrong with that
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
The restaurants near me have dish-washing machines, even glass-washing machines with special racks for the huge wineglasses.
So I imagine the job has changed much since my student days.
Now, it will be: scrape the plates and load.
Dry hands ?
@emmasfriend gloves? Contempt for germ theory is still required. You'll still know everything.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@emmasfriend I worked in a hotel for 10 years, yea they have machines but someone has to scrape, load, and put back. Also pots still need to be washed by hands.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
I’d also assume a free meal per shift (which is industry standard ) so in my mind the pay is more than 20 an hour .
EldritchFox · 41-45, F
Sure, that's more than I make now.
swirlie · 31-35, F
Why would I wash dishes for $20 an hour when I could get a job driving a truck for $30 an hour where I live?
Birdbox1986 · 36-40, F
@swirlie because not everyone can get a license
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Birdbox1986
Then go and wash dishes if you can't get a license!
