Yeah well something like that happened to me. I went and got the manager when I discovered what happened. He took the cashier and the money tray to the back and handed me the missing change. And fired the cashier. She was sneaky with her technique but it went past me what she was doing at the time. I discovered it when I went to another store, should have had more cash.

If it's a coordinated setup there is little you can do about it. Ask for the manager and he/she may respond by checking the cash register and if no $100 bill there he/she is caught in the middle with the risk of a false accusation about the waiter and will likely suggest that you are mistaken. If you take it further then you may be at risk. In America, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. So where is the proof that you handed the waiter $100?

It was a long-long time ago, but for a few years I was involved in developing bank accounting systems, and probably looked at hundreds of bank balance sheets. Common accounts were for something like "teller short", "teller long". A non-zero balance of a few dollars was fairly common; even bank tellers make mistakes :)

A few interesting cashier experiences at the world's largest retailer, or maybe 2nd largest now. One was a miscoded 6-pack of beer where it rang up at a case-lot price. Thankfully I caught it just before leaving the store and went to customer service where there was considerable confusion involving the store manager on how to reverse the wrong code and key in a new code when there wasn't a new code.
Another was when I got home from shopping there and discovered that I also had a new wristwatch along with my other purchases. Checked the receipt and I hadn't been charged for it, so apparently it was intended for the shopper following me in line. While easy enough for me to return it to the store, I had to imagine the disappointment of the shopper who went home and discovered his/her watch not there.
The most interesting was my purchase of Rainier cherries. Those sweet cherries that always carry a premium price, especially when they first appear at the stores. When the cashier punched them in the register showed them correctly at like $7 a pound. When she saw that she whispered "wow!" then cancelled the entry and manually punched in the code for red grapes at $1.29 a pound.
I was shopping yesterday at Home Depot where they seem to be trying to force all checkouts to use their self check-out devices, and I have to wonder about the level of customer honesty with the transition to self-checkout. I was there purchasing wood screws; products where there are hundreds of different screw sizes, types, and counts with prices ranging from a dollar to ten+ dollars, all in look alike packages. Would seemingly be easy to miscode a purchase and there are no obvious controls to prevent that. Just wondering.

@ArishMell its supposed to be a full proof system. you put in the amount the customer gives you and it tells you the amount to give back. the problem lies when the cashier just hits cash tender without entering in an amount. LOLOL
