"Back in my day it was RoManTiC to manipulate and pressure someone to say yes in front of a huge group of strangers because we were ToUgh".
Yeah, okay Bertha. Settle down and take your high blood pressure meds.

I'm not sure why older generations imply that not liking public proposals is some new concept. It isn't a matter or being fragile or sensitive. It's a matter of added pressure to say yes, and a loss of intimacy. I told my husband before he ever proposed to me that I did not want a public proposal- and that was just about 20 years and ten kids ago. It isn't some new concept the younger generations are coming up with because they lack romance or are too fragile. It simply adds unneeded pressure, makes the person proposed to feel like the bad guy if they say no, and makes the moment far less intimate to have a huge audience. Nothing at all wrong with disliking such a thing- I disliked it 20 years ago, my husband's Mother disliked it 45 years ago, and I'm quite sure people disliked the concept before that. There is nothing fragile or 'you kids these days' about it, in my opinion. It's very fair.

Bad idea all round.

Agreed, it's sheer manipulation, attempting to get a person to react in a certain way out of peer pressure...

I would be afraid they would say not just no, but Hell No!.
It reeks of desperation and self doubt.

I just tried to wait until a store was clear so I could ask a girl for her number but the customers kept coming for like 15 minutes so I ended up asking in front of a random guy. 馃檭
Lol, yep. Better be sure you know what the answer will be.
