We didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing until I was 6 years old, but I managed to serve 2 years in the army without ever having to bivouack in the field.

@dancingtongue What's the most important thing you learned in the army?

@MrGomco How to manage up; manage your superiors. Very valuable in a corporate career. Actually I learned many things in the army. As a draftee just having lost his student deferment on graduation and with two years of ROTC training (only to be told my eyesight was too poor to be an officer telling others where to shoot, but good enough to aim and fire the gun), I considered it a graduate school education in real world dynamics. It was a unique time when college graduate draftees had more in common with junior officers, and senior officers/NCOs were just trying to complete their 20 years after WWII and being recalled for Korea. When racial and social integration was actually being required in the barracks while Civil Rights was dividing the civilians.
