Would it be a gift or a curse for you?

What if you could remember everything, from every day that you've been alive and old enough to be cognitively aware? Not just the major things or events that were important to you, but
every,
little,
single,
thing.
Both good and bad....
Both insignificant and important...
All catagorized by date.
Instant recall.
Unable to forget even one small detail you've seen, heard, or experienced.
Total recall.
Actually this condition does exist in varying degrees. It is called highly superior autobiographical memory or Hyperthymesia.
What do you think life would be like if you had Hyperthymesia? A dream or a nightmare? Do you actually have a good memory or do you struggle to remember what you ate for breakfast yesterday?

What do you think?

I deal with something like that as a part of one of the types of Synesthesia I have and it has dulled some now due to the medications I've had to take over the years and other factors.

I found it very frustrating to remember what someone said, how they said it, how they were standing, how the sun was shining, what they were wearing and the time of day plus so many other things and recalling them back to them and they'd still insist they "Don't recall" or they'd lie when I KNEW I was not wrong. I had no choice to remember everything that way.

Even when I tell a story I have to tell it in long form, exactly as it happened like a movie because that's how I see it in my head and am extremely verbose because of it. I thought having it dulled would bring me such relief, but honestly I find it anxiety inducing.

I remember all of my dreams too. Even the ones from decades ago and they often pick up where they left off years later.
Marilu Henner from "Taxi" has this condition. Amazing, truly. And she always seems to be smiling... hmmm 🤔

I think I’d have to pass on that.

I think I'd be insecure if I lived with that condition, wouldn't you second guess everything you did so you wouldn't mess up and have bad memories?
Blondily · F
Im not as bad as that but can remember as far back being in a crib and can remember things I wish Id forget.
EldritchFox · 41-45, F
That would be very very bad.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
I do already. Even more so when I’m dreaming. Sometimes it’s really nice, other times it’s truly awful.

I think it would make me intolerable to others.. And its not like I dont get that enough now..😷
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
I can holde a grudge way longer than I wish to, so for me it would be a curse.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@TheRealBarbossa Fair enough. That would make it worse.

There’s truth in the saying
Ignorance is Bliss
If you had this condition does it mean you also remember and feel every single emotion you had when these things happened to you or do your feelings about them they fade with time?
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Ben1000 I would think the feeling remains if the memory is exact and pure.
Ben1000 · 41-45, M
@LadyBronte it would an awesome party trick and great for sitting exams, but in normal everyday life I’d imagine it would horrible.
Humans tend to think about the negative more than the positive so would be some heavy thoughts ahead.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Ben1000 I have to agree with that. My memory and level of empathy is bad enough. I feel like Hyperthymesia would be excruciating.
There are some things I'd rather forget.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
It would be alright if it was just factual memories, but too overwhelming if it came with all the emotions attached.
