@octoberthesixth🤔what as in a rough diamond where you are kinder than you actual look lol 😆

Diamonds are one of the most common gemstones out there. The reason they have as much value as they do is because of a monopoly with a propaganda machine that preys on women's insecurities

Even if it was well-intentioned, it's still a dumb thing to be compared to

@octoberthesixth If a man isn't spending lots of money on you, he must not love you

@TinyViolins this is not a new thing though and I don't think it's got any thing to do with precious materials. Eve had her eye on the apple in the garden (because it was forbidden?) - it would be fair to suggest that women expect men to face some degree of difficulty in order to obtain something for them and profer it to them - I think they deem that 'effort' precious rather than the actual object.

@octoberthesixth Historically, the exact opposite was true. Dowries go at least as far back as ancient Babylon. The family of the bride would typically pay the groom, or transfer some kind of wealth, over to him as a way to seal the marriage. The practice was also in ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, India, and it even pops up in Russian literature I read from 150 years ago.

Back then women didn't really earn money, so they'd basically be an extra mouth to feed for the duration of the marriage. Fathers of the bride would use this bribe to entice a husband to take on that responsibility.

The whole engagement ring thing started after WWII. The wildly expensive weddings that are so common today were typically only reserved for royalty and wealthy elite. Once women started joining the workforce, they finally had their own money, and advertisers (who were pretty much all men) decided they'd try to sell things to them. Kitchen stuff, hygiene stuff, pretty jewelry, fancy clothes, etc. Basically all stuff that would make them feel like valuable housewives.

Women were essentially duped by salesmen into thinking they needed to buy or own all sorts of trivial items
