If a stranger asks for a hug, how would you react?

I was walking my dog at night in my apartment complex and a man I’d never seen who was clearly inebriated staggered over to the nearby dumpster and struggled to throw his bag of trash in. Reflexively, I lifted the lid for him and he sank the shot. Then he noticed my dog and asked if he could pet her. I said what I usually say…she hasn’t bitten anyone yet but I can’t make promises.

Then he asked if he could have a hug from me. I smiled and said, considering that I don’t know you, I’m not comfortable with that. He smiled back and said no problem. He was evicted quite soon and I never saw him again.

I still kinda wish I’d granted the hug. Kinda.

I have done so on rare occasions. It is vital to realize the differe ce one can make. It requires a sense of who they are and what will help them when they are in distress. Do do with thought and safety.

Be highly suspicious and ready my blade just incase. Sure she is 3'2'' and wearing a girlscout uniform but that is how they rob you of all your money for delicious cookies

Somehow I have now restricted any type of physical touches with random persons/strangers. Although I will be available to help them in the ways I could do.

Depends on the stranger. Whats the situation?

Hygiene would be my first concern and I don't know if I could move past that, if they're covered in piss and blood for example.
Or if it's a horny man.
Other than these, I'm open to hug 🐻

Less startled than their wanting to sit on my lap 🥴

In general, no harm done I'll allow it. If something is throwing red flags, maybe not. But, default yes.

If someone is desperate enough to ask me for a hug then I figure they need a hug more than I would rather not. As long as they're not using it was a distraction for some other purpose and they're not offensively smelly then I don't see any harm in it. People, sometimes, just need to be hugged.
