It's clear that the promise we were sold on, that college education is the path to a prosperous middle class life, was primarily an illusion and so these loans were taken out under false pretenses. They absolutely should be forgiven for failing to deliver on what it was designed for and for crippling almost an entire generation economically.
But the one criticism I keep having about this policy is that without making college education free of charge or subsidized in some other way, you're not being fair to people who are in university now or plan to attend in the future.
They're probably going to have to take out loans too, but the forgiveness only applies to those who hold the debt now. It's unfair to have one policy without the other, and likely to push the burden of paying for education onto the future rather than on the government which I believe should be responsible for making sure its progeny is educated and prepared to take on the challenges of the future.
