When I visited my family recently…

I was playing a lot of 80s music, whereupon my sisters got into a discussion (not argument, you understand) about the song "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" by Tears For Fears.

My youngest sister (49) claimed it as a "Gen X anthem" because it was a popular song with the teenagers of the day.

My middle sister (62) maintained that since Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are Baby Boomers, it must be a "Boomer anthem" for those of us on the tail end of that generation.

I found the discussion interesting but left them to it. Either way, I think it’s a great song.

Elements of both in that.

Initial scene from the 70s. Gen x that scooter was Gen x. Yet the house Boomer!
The old car. Boomer
The glider. Gen x
Payphone! Definitely Boomer
The old style porta potty. Sort of both.
The old gas pumps. Definitely boomer.
Sand buggy. Gen x

Over all I would say it's a crossover generational song

If a boomer says it's a boomer song it's a boomer song. The last thing I wanna be associated with is anything my parents listen to (Ada storms off to the bedroom slams door turns some grunge music on full blast) LOLZ!!!😆

Whenever I hear it I am reminded of a TV movie or miniseries from a few decades ago about the rise of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

The promos and film used that song a lot.

@JoyfulSilence That’s what has made it an "anthem". 👍🏽

Inadvertently - maybe? - you raise an interesting point: Does being born in any particular era automatically make you a full-fledged member of that era?
@SW-User That’s a good question, especially with our generation. The oldest Boomers turn 80 next year, the youngest ones turn 60 this year. That’s a sizable gap.

I love that song too! I never really thought of it as a generational song. I feel the band is more like me, Gen X, The lyrics sound more cynical and less idealistic to be a boomer song.

Common Ground everywhere you look! I wish we could use it to be more united.

And then, of course, just to complicate matters further.....
"Everybody Wants to Run the World" is a re-recording of the band's song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". The reworked single was released in May 1986 as the theme song for the Sport Aid campaign, a charitable event held to raise money for famine relief in Africa.

At least it's not the millennials and the boomers getting into it 🤪🤭
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
It's a song for the ages

A good song, but I didn't know it was an "anthem" for anybody. Oh well.
