I Own a Gun [Gun Ownership]

I Bought A Gun... I want this gun to be an extension of my hand..I want to feel so comfortable that when I am forced to pull the trigger, the party on the other end knows I mean business.

I have to admit it was a little intimidating..walking into what seemed like the all male club..I I quickly got over that. The men in the aisle actually parted as i walked by..i guess I looked like I meant business.
I tried the 9MM Glock.  that is a powerful gun..make no mistake on that one..but the grip was short and  thick.  the salesman said because it helda  larger magazine..that will be my next gun.
I had pretty much made up my mind..I bought the Ruger LCP for a great price. .He was a little surprised i was so decisive.   he recommended the ruger revolver. I stuck to my original choice..
What is so amazing is I did not second guess myself..Thanks for my EP friends, I had done my research and this seemed to be the best one for me..It actually looks like a toy gun..We have a 5 day waiting period here and then I take a class in april..

P.S. if you are looking for a man, forget Home Depot..this is the place!

AKH, if you are still looking, Ruger makes 2 models you might consider, if you want to get a 9mm.

SR9c, which is the compact version of the SR9. It comes with 2 magazines, one which holds 10 and one which holds 17 shots. Point is, you can be concealed and have the larger magazine on standby.

If you want to go smaller with 9mm, their smallest is the LC9, which is about the size of your Lcp. Your local gun shop or your gun range might have one, that you can try. If you like it better than the .380 LCP, you could trade up, for (hopefully) not much more.

you have to pull the slide back. i want to turn off the safety and point and shoot. and semis jam occasionally.
bamaswitch
You need to practice and learn how to clear a jam, of whatever kind (stovepipe, failure to fire, failure to feed). If you can afford it, training should help you get past your fears. Training AND practice definitely will. :D
DirtyMartini
Can't go wrong with the trusted wheel gun (a revolver). Accurate, never jams, and you can alway's tell when it's ready to shoot. Rock on Pistol Annie!
Jericho7
My personal favorite is the Kimber 1911. But at this point because of what I know of real violence a gun is not about self defense, nor should it ever be used for intimidation. The only time is should ever come out is because you are going to pull the trigger with the intent of murdering someone. Period. Yes it may be a situation of your life verses someone else's but a gun is still just for killing.

i do not have that brute strength or knowledge...but i want someone to know that if they enter my home, i mean business...i live in the wild west down here..
Jericho7
certainly understandable. I deal with body weight strikes and debilitating targeted injury. brute strength honestly is never a factor. www.targetfocustraining.com.

that is right. I remember your story now.
BooSFla
Didn't read all 40 comments so forgive me if these have been asked and answered.

Questions:
Are/ can/ will you concealed carry?

What class are you taking? for carry or safe handling?

Suggestions/ advice;

Remember safety first, the firearm is 'always' loaded and should be treated as such. If someone hands you a firearm check it for yourself.

Practice is key, you are better shooting 50- 100 (100- 200 if you have multiple guns) rounds or so per range trip. Your concentration may wander or fade beyond that

.

it is small and compact, it is easy to conceal. it is easy to hold at least for a woman. I tried the glock but the handle was too big around for me to comfortably hold since it holds more bullets. It has an excellent reputation and several ep men recommended it and one of my friends asked a sheriff and they said that was the best gun..now the gunsmith at the shop i bought it at said the revolver would be more reliable. that this gun can jam..the spring load.
i think i can comfortably manage this one...

Over the weekend a retired LEO told me that Kel-Tecs and other tiny pocket guns like the LCP are more of a "Get off me gun" than anything else. If you really want accuracy or the ability to fire from any distance, you'd probably need something larger, at least as large as a Glock 26, if you like 9mm or my personal favorite, a G30 in .45 :) or a G27 in .40. So sue me, I like Glocks. They're ultra-reliable. :)
akindheart · 61-69, F
you know, i tried the Glock in my hand (which is quite small) but i liked the feel of it. i was just afraid i would drop it which would do me no good, right?
bamaswitch
Funny thing about the Glocks. They have 3 built-in safeties. One to keep it from firing if you drop it, so don't fret, unless you happen to drop it on concrete, especially from more than a few feet.

I think it is WONDERFUL to know more women are getting educated about firearms. As a former military member and law enforcement officer having a gun in my hand is as nature to me as breathing. I have 8 handguns and two shotguns. To me, weapons are sexy. Sleek lines, powerful steel, and amazing to touch. I hope you enjoy your class and come to appreciate and respect the lethal decision making tool you now have in your possession. I know you will.
akindheart · 61-69, F
I am not sure how i missed your comment but thank you for the encouragement..
airfilibabik
Guns take all the fun out of killing! You don't get to enjoy the fear in the eyes and hear that last gasp for life escaping your victim's lungs as they slowly die. Knifing is so much more intimate. There is no chance for the victim to escape a bullet fired from a kilometer away. They make it too easy to kill from a distance. There is no relationship between victim and killer, and there is no chance for the victim to fight or run away for its life. No more fun!

Have you shot teh LCP yet? I just got one last week, I've broken it down a few times, loaded, and un-loaded it, dry fired it, etc.. But I need to get to the range!

I think I'll get a mannequin to practice on, shove the barrel into it's gut before firing so I can get that up close and personal feeling....... just joking Airfilibabik, it does sound fun though.
thecarer
We don't go much on pistols here but have owned rifles and shotguns as in country .Its extremely hard to get a licence for these but easy to get hold of on black market.Strange we have these severe laws to stop people owning guns its not the guns that are dangerous but the person who loads and pulls trigger.
gemini66105
Excellent, I'm glad to hear that another woman has bought a gun, and realizes that it is a serious tool, not some toy. Get all the training you can you wont regret it. Also the LCP is a good gun, I have several friends that hav one and they really like it, one is on my list!
lingerieme
I have found that the 380 is never adaquite not enough take down power . I still prefer a snubby 38/357 or a 45 commander. As we have no waiting period I have owned both. The 9mm is a bare minimum round for me.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i am beginning to think I should have bought the Glock but the grip was too big for my hands..that is what the FBI uses..
bamaswitch
I tend to agree. I prefer something in the .40 and above range, without going over .45. Stopping power is a nice label, but in the real world, it depends on a lot of factors. Some attackers can be put down and stopped with as little as one or two .22 LR rounds, but when you can manage to carry a larger caliber, without much trouble, do you really want to bet your life on that? I would much prefer a Ruger snubnose (LCR) in .357 magnum, when a .40 and above is not available.
akindheart · 61-69, F
wow...that is some story Ozroller...makes you wonder. I have not bought ammo yet.i want to take the class first...you realize the seriousness of owning a gun when you hold it for the first time..I will be smart not stupid...hugs my friend
bamaswitch
Great idea to make sure you know what you are doing before it's too late. Taking a class can also help you learn the laws in your area and know what is ok and what isn't. Good for you! :)
gemini66105
I can't go along with that, the biggest thing is not putting yourself in any situation where you may need one, avoid those places you know you should avoid. Granted the bad guys will sometimes come looking for victims, but don't make it easy for them.
akindheart · 61-69, F
humpty..i have to agree.. i am going to take a class on safety. we have a 5 day waiting period here along with a background check and a 50 page application or so it seems..I don't know why I felt so compelled to buy one but i thought about it for over a year..
akindheart · 61-69, F
I did my research thanks to my friends on EP and tried out a couple..the Ruger was the all around favorite.I hope i never have to use it.
my neighbor said if you buy a gun, you will need a gun.. that was a little scary!
rw5453
If you own it, know how to use it, sounds like you are on the right track. One of the local gun clubs is opening a location near to me soon. I am already signed up. Practice, practice, practice

gemini66105
LOL, I can understand that! I'd be more than happy to teach you both! To start with you need to get that beast out of the box and get the feel of it, how it works and how to load/unload it.
akindheart · 61-69, F
hey my friend..no I have not taken it out of the box..maybe you can teach me woodworking and guns! I have my bosses face printed out for my target...right between the eyes , I am aiming for!
akindheart · 61-69, F
me too..i don't want to use it unless i have to. right now, I have to find someone to teach me..online..the NRA I suppose
BooSFla
You could check online for instructors, or you could check the local ranges for certified instructors. In the unlikely event you did have to use it don't answer any questions from the police, except to say you were in fear for your life and they need to speak to your attorney for any further info.

If you were in my area I would be happy to help out, I taught my wife how to shoot and now she is very proficient.
bamaswitch
Good Luck, with finding what fits you, so you will be safe and comfortable with it. :)
akindheart · 61-69, F
I need to get to the range. there is no excuse to have a gun and not be able to use it..
bamaswitch
If you haven't already, check with your local Sheriff's office. They usually have a CCW class, usually for free, paid for by taxpayer dollars, in your area. When I took one here, we had classroom time, Q&A, plus they gave instruction and we shot targets for about an hour. it's definitely worth looking into. :D
akindheart · 61-69, F
i took the concealed weapon permit class and shot several guns but not my own. i can shoot for free at the range on monday. i bought target ammo and hollow points? i think they are called.
DirtyMartini
"The grip was short and thick"....glad to learn that you prefer to handle something with a little more length.
akindheart · 61-69, F
As long as it shoots, I am not going to quibble over an inch or two..
DirtyMartini
Wise lady!
airfilibabik
You realized I was pulling your leg. "Since I am single and pretty..." I have to agree with that! In nature, the prettiest are often the deadliest!
blackgirl71
I like the Glock 9MM myself, I used to have a firearms certificate but let it lapse....perhaps its time to renew it again....:)
akindheart · 61-69, F
I loved the Glock. matter of fact, it is manufactured where my son lives..but it was justtoo big for my hand..it is sad that life has led us to buy guns..
akindheart · 61-69, F
thank you ourmutualneeds..i have to agree.i think our world is in turmoil..i might be lucky and not run into any trouble but i want to be prepared...
akindheart · 61-69, F
How right you are..believe me i am NOT looking for trouble..but if it comes to me, I want to be ready..I think our country is in serious trouble..
akindheart · 61-69, F
i can't find anyone to help me shootit..or load it..someone recommended you tube..i can't believe that the place i bought it does not have a class for women..
akindheart · 61-69, F
well i am not into this for the fun..and i hope i never have to use it...but i will defend myself..since i am single and pretty much alone...hugs my friend..
akindheart · 61-69, F
Good idea..i never thought to check there..it is weird because the gun shop has concealed weapons classes..how good is that? thanks!
akindheart · 61-69, F
thanks..i will be lucky to just shoot my target. i checked on the price of a laser guide and it was as much as the gun!
akindheart · 61-69, F
me too..rw5453, I am attending a class as soon as it opens! and the gun is for protection...I hope I don't have to use it!
CrazyWaterSpring
How often do you go to the range? Shooting a box of shells is relaxing.
akindheart · 61-69, F
I have owned this gun for over 2 years, went thru the concealed weapon permit and have never shot the gun yet...sad huh?
SleepingTiger
Hun, find a local Tactical Shooting training group who trains w/ paintball AND live fire training methods, and go to a few courses. ESPECIALLY a low light course since the most likely situation in which you'll shoot will be darkness or low light conditions. Then,
SleepingTiger
*sorry missfired ;)
...then get ypir self to the range and shoot, shoot, shoot.

The most ideal situation in which to learn to use a gun is NOT; 2AM, half asleep, adrinalin amped through the roof , facing a threat that wants to do you harm and who and who probably has you out guned. ( if you are gpoing to drop a big boy you are going to have to hit your mark with a couple rounds at least, using that 380 )

Lone ya, cowgirl!
akindheart · 61-69, F
thanks for the comment..it was a little overwhelming..I looked at the sig too. I think the Ruger LCP will fit nicely in my purse and my hand.
akindheart · 61-69, F
you mean read the manual????? oh boy, i am going to be lost..OK< I will..first thing tomorrow..
silkgirl8
I agree with you..........protection is important.
I am not allowed to have a gun in SCOTLAND, against the law.
Silly law.
verydeepthinking
Glad you joined the world of shooting. Now go out and have a blast! Pun intended.
akindheart · 61-69, F
LOL. i need some tutoring..
BigAsset
does this mean you will stop playing with my gun :'( ....lol
akindheart · 61-69, F
Can you point and shoot too....xoxox
BigAsset
hahaha....lets test...bang bang bang....takes time to reload ;)
akindheart · 61-69, F
so you are carrying a semi automatic...((grin))
akindheart · 61-69, F
no, i would not use it on sweet men like you..besides, i have not bought the ammo yet...lol
akindheart · 61-69, F
Airfilibabik..you are one sweet person..i mean it..thank you love!
greeneyedlady72
I will have to remember that when I'm single again :)
akindheart · 61-69, F
Yep. it is the sign of the times unfortunately.
akindheart · 61-69, F
