House Dem declares gun control will happen even if it means abolishing filibuster or expanding Supreme Court

GOP Rep. Jim Jordan says the comments prove what Democrats are planning: 'Now, we know'

Rep. Mondaire Jones said Thursday Democrats will abolish the Senate filibuster and pack the Supreme Court in order to pass more restrictions on guns, as the House prepares to advance a package of gun bills next week.

Jones, D-N.Y., made the comments at a House Judiciary Committee markup on a package called the "Protecting Our Kids Act." The emergency committee meeting was called by Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., in response to the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, in recent weeks.

"Enough of you telling us that school shootings are a fact of life when every other country like ours has virtually ended it. Enough of you blaming mental illness and then defunding mental health care in this country. Enough of your thoughts and prayers," Jones said during the emotional hearing.

"You will not stop us from advancing the Protecting Our Kids Act today," he added. "If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it. And we will not rest until we have taken weapons of war out of circulation and our communities each and every day."

But House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Jones with his Thursday comments showed Democrats fundamentally don't want to compromise.

"Now we know where they want to go. He just said it," Jordan, said. "End the filibuster. Expand the court. Forget the Constitution. Now, we know."

HOUSE DEMS' GUN PACKAGE TO RAISE AGE LIMIT FOR SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE PURCHASES, BAN ‘HIGH CAPACITY’ MAGAZINES

The House is expected to vote on the Protecting Our Kids Act next week. It would raise the age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle to 21, tighten regulations on "ghost guns" and ban new large-capacity magazines, among several other things. The chamber is also expected to address red flag laws.

Meanwhile, a group of primarily moderate senators is negotiating a more modest agreement that could make it through the Senate, which has a 60-vote filibuster that gives the GOP minority far more say than in the House.

"Democrats blame guns. They criticize the NRA. They call Republicans names. But let's be honest, they've told us what they want to do. Their real beef is with the Second Amendment," Jordan added. "Their goal, plain and simple, is to get rid of the Second Amendment. Joe Biden said it the other day, said he wants to ban 9mm handguns."

The Thursday committee markup also included several emotional speeches from Democrats, including Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Ga., who talked about losing her son to gun violence.

Republicans, meanwhile, argued Democrats are ignoring key problems like mental health and the family that are contributing to gun violence. They also argued Democrats' proposals may be unconstitutional.

"The courts have made it pretty clear you cannot deprive young adults any more of the remainder of Americans of their core Second Amendment right to self-defense," Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., said of the proposal to increase the age at which Americans can buy semiautomatic rifles.

How many of these shooting will we have to go through before someone in the misinformation business or high office mentions the role drugs may have played. Considering how many of Salvador Ramos's immediate family had serious drub problems, it's a pretty safe bet that Salvador's mind may have also been warped with the help of illegal drugs.

Why is there no attention paid to the relationship between illegal drug use and violence?

@Heartlander Try living in the present, it's a great place to be. IF one's present isn't the good ol' U S of A!

WW2 happened within my lifetime; and if you look around, we are still living in its shadow,

I did spend about 6 months in the UK, it was a nice experience and I love the Brits. But like in the US, there's the occasional misleader within the leadership.
room101 · 51-55, M
@Heartlander Yes, we do indeed still live in the shadow of WW2 but the point is, most of us in Europe are very aware of that and refuse to be taken in by the far right again. And yes, we have our fair share of "misleaders" but very few of them actually get into leadership positions. Boris Johnson is a bit of an exception because of the shitshow that was Brexit and the total nonsense that briefly became our Labour Party.
They'll never take our guns!
kentex35 · 100+, M
@Lovingsomeone we don't want them if you are safe and sane.
That would be great, but the GOP won’t let it happen.

They really, really don’t care about children—certainly not the actual living and breathing ones, with parents who love and want them.

They don’t care about the unwanted ones, either, not once they’re born—or they wouldn’t fight funding for programs like Head Start or school lunches.

And if they really cared about fetuses, they’d provide prenatal care for low income women.

So for them children don’t matter. Even the abortion issue is really about controlling women. 😞

@bijouxbroussard You are a well informed citizen. Intelligent answer from someone aware of the truth. LGBTQ has more rights and protection than women do and still gaining. It's sad.

I don't own a gun but surely won't stand behind taking guns from all the legal and law abiding owners. I WILL stand behind arresting and jailing all who are using guns for crimes and killing innocent people. I also stand behind the idea of people paying attention to what children, spouses, etc.. are doing instead of turning a blind eye. Many times, what people do is NOT a real surprise when people pay attention to how others around them are acting.
kentex35 · 100+, M
What a tapestry. You Im a Democrat but I don't want your gun or anyone's gun. Self defence is a God given right. Not Republicans not the second amendment. Not the NRA. I just want me purchases sold to sane people. People with a verifiable name and address and no psychiatric history or major criminal history. And that's not enough but reasonable.
Asa marine I once qualified third highest on the range there were at least hundred Marines qualifying. I'm still proud of it except that I choked. The day before I was pushing 240 out of a possible 250. So on QUAL day I've got everyone and their uncle hanging around. Made me nervous. So I like guns enough I'm just not a hunter. And the sixteen it M-4 didn't strike me as a hunting rifle. Is it used that way? And we know there are those with a pistol open carry that were once bullied now going places going to innocently provoke an opportunity to blast someone. It's the sick and balls they never had.
What my main point is here is the Democrats have been set up by that slime ball hillbilly McConnell. They believe their GOP counterparts when they say they are in on a some gun control and they are touting a wonderful partnership to get something done only trouble is when it comes to a vote the GOP will vote the way they usually do and leave the Democrats high and dry on the losing end and use that during the midterms to get voted making Democrats look like they are ignorant and can't do anything even though they are taking away more rights than anyone as long as they keep the NRA and lax gun control laws as is, they aren't going to give up their money from the gun lobby for no one including their own.
Didn't mean to go on about it but that my opinion.
Funny thing: no guns allowed at RNC conventions.
Funny thing: no guns allowed at Trump rallies.
Funny thing: no guns allowed when Trump speaks to the NRA.
I guess conservatives know how to keep a child safe after all!!!
room101 · 51-55, M
@ElwoodBlues That's not Republican hypocrisy by any chance? Colour me shocked😱
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@ElwoodBlues Isn’t that an infringement of peoples 2nd Amendment rights to carry arms ?
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
It will never happen. They’ve been trying to end the filibuster since Biden took office and Manchin and Synema have stood resolute that they are not for it. Packing the Supreme Court would require ending the filibuster as well. And the GOP is about to deliver a wallop to Biden and the democrats in the mid terms. Sad thing is the democrats know it, this is all just political grandstanding to save their own seats.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
Hopefully the first step...
Northwest · M
The House bill is not going to pass and there isn't going to be any SCOTUS expansion in the near future.

It's really very simple: we love our guns, and by "we" I mean collectively.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
None of this is going to stop shootings.
@smileylovesgaming
i found out on Google that the UK has over 600,000 unregistered gun's.
Wow, how interesting! I found out on Google that Jewish space lasers are creating worldwide havoc. But without links to reputable sources, I'm gonna take your random claim with a few boulders of salt!

So, democrats plan to take a dump on the Constitution and wipe their asses with the flag.

How shocking - not.
room101 · 51-55, M
@Budwick generally speaking I understand very little of your mindless drivel.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@room101
I understand very little

Then take a guess Sparky. What do you think "I am totally pro-life!" might mean.
room101 · 51-55, M
@Budwick why would I encourage you in your demented ramblings
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Ending the filibuster would be a disaster for both parties. And America. The American people won't stand for it.

We are all already sick of the 2-party system where elected officials go to Washington to represent their party rather than their constituents. At the moment there are a few sane Republicans. Hopefully we can grow back to representative government from there.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Changeisgonnacome Considering the tyranny of the majority, thankfully we are a democratic republic.
Changeisgonnacome · 61-69, F
@Heartlander that doesn't erase the fifteenth amendment.
Even the founding fathers recognized the right to participate in a democracy. That's distinct from a minority regime.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Changeisgonnacome Both parties try to govern as a minority regime. Elected officials are first filtered through a primary, then a general election, and thus may represent the wishes of but 26% of the population. Then they assume they have a mandate from the people, ignoring the reality that 74% would have chosen someone else.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Bwa ha ha! 😆

Keep dreaming, neither party is doing shit about gun control just like the last 20 years or so, the Democrats are highlighting this because they feel its their best chance not to get decimated in the 2022 elections.

Serious question for ya:

Do you have any sense of history or context in your life or do you just live entirely in the now, content with having others tell you what to say and believe?
They don't have the balls to do something like this.
Two words put together: “ gun control”. Hear it constantly. Just what does it exactly mean and entail? Any one answer?
Northwest · M
@soar2newhighs

Just what does it exactly mean

The bill in question is pretty clear. You should read it. Or simply read this article, but here it is:

it would raise the age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle to 21, tighten regulations on "ghost guns" and ban new large-capacity magazines
@Northwest Thanks for your response.
Changeisgonnacome · 61-69, F
The will of the electorate, of the country is being thwarted in Washington on everything.
Changeisgonnacome · 61-69, F
Lol! Uh huh. Sure. We'll hold our breath for the Dems to allow action.
Changeisgonnacome · 61-69, F
Lol! Dems doing stuff that's effective?
No way.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
I’d be fine with “going after the second amendment” but that’s always just a right wing straw man so these lunatic politicians can make ads saying “come and get ‘em” them shoot something.

There is no way to govern with these lunatics.
