More Gun Insanity in America: 'Active shooter' incident at Texas school, Multiple Fatalities

Multiple people are dead, including several children, after an "active shooter" incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Multiple sources told ABC News the suspect is dead. Uvalde Memorial Hospital has confirmed to ABC News that two children died from presumed gunshot injuries in the incident.

@Secrettoacurtsy California, my state, makes it harder to get a handgun than other states. Does not impede someone with evil in their heart from carrying out bad actions.

Gun control laws only affect law-abiding people who go through legal avenues to obtain firearms. Criminals overwhelmingly obtain their firearms through illegal channels and will never be deterred by state and federal laws. That's why background checks have virtually no impact on criminals.

@Heartlander 2021 stats in my state. Legal gun owners used their guns and ammo to donate nearly one million that's ,1,000,000 lbs of processed wild game to feed the less fortunate. And that's only through the share the harvest program. Not counting what is given locally

This school shooting in TX was a complete and horrible tragedy... my heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their families.

I was surprised at how quick it turned into a political talking point. A good start would be to enforce gun laws already in place. Mental illness needs more work, and people who are mentally impaired, should not be allowed to own a gun... How to find those people before they do harm is the question.

Looking at other cities with high gun crime rates, not prosecuting criminals who commit gun crimes to the fullest extent of the law is a crime against Innocent victims as well.
In closing, who is to say that when a criminal commits a gun crime, and gets released to do it again the same or next day, that it isn't triggering a mentally deranged person?

@ddlknaz The 18-year-old deranged shooter brought two AR-15's legally. It is insane that he could do that. Congress must reinstate the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, this time with no expiration date. No civilian has any legitimate need for military-grade weapons like the AR-15, or semi-auto pistols with large capacity magazines.

@badminton Which is what I said, people with mental illness should not have such a weapon, or any weapon for that matter. Criminals who use weapons to cause harm or have caused harm to law abiding citizens, should not be allowed to own them either.

Your statement about no civilian should be allowed to own them, I don't agree with. I think the for/against a ban is about 50/50... We'll have to see how it works out. I think an assault on gun criminals would be more effective.

Just curious... do we know anything about this shooter? Like did he have a psych history? Were there warning signs? How did he get these firearms? Was there anyone there who was legally carrying that could have stopped this threat?

Doesn't bring back the lost souls and it's a tragedy indeed. Oh, out of curiosity as well, I wonder how many crimes were stopped this afternoon and nation-wide by legally armed civilians.

Y'all act like gun control will stop this problem. It's like putting a band-aid on a mortal wound. If I really wanted to, I can get a gun off the street for a 100 dollars or less.

@LordShadowfire first of all I don't have a gun dealer. Second, there's more avenues to getting illegal guns on the streets. Once again, harsher gun control laws won't stop this issue. Criminals will find another way to obtain illegal guns. Possibly even through the borders in the north and/ or south. Gun control laws, It's just a band aid on a bigger problem. Too many people with mental issues here without proper treatment. We need metal detectors before we enter a building. This culture here is too wrapped around with guns and criminality. There's countries with lax gun laws and they don't have no where near the amount of violent crime rate as the USA. It's the culture here and the lack of proper mental health care.

Sure, but where do the crooks selling them get them? Somebody up the chain is still buying them legally, filing off the serial numbers, and distributing them for sale.
I do, however, agree that the bigger problem is

@Darksideinthenight2 Let's subvert the dominant paradigm.

We need a sense of urgency. Mass shootings and the daily handgun murders are becoming more frequent. You, or me, or our families, or our friends, could be the next victims. Let's start a movement to demand our elected representatives refuse to take any campaign contributions from the gun industry. It's a start in changing the gun madness of America.
