Who would have thought...

Government corruption has emerged as a top issue in the upcoming US midterm elections, with an overwhelming majority of Americans saying US government officials use their public office for personal financial gain, according to an exclusive Harris poll for the Guardian.

Nearly nine out of 10 Americans said that government corruption, as defined as elected officials putting their own or their donors’ financial interests ahead of the public’s, is a problem, according to the survey.

Three-quarters (76%) of voters said that elected officials care more about enriching themselves than improving the economy for ordinary people. Voters were more likely to say that government corruption (65%) is more concerning than corporate power (29%). Just under 10% said that neither concerns them.

TERM LIMITS! The politicians wouldn't have time to weave their webs of corruption, and we might get some better candidates!

@fanuc2013 That is certainly a factor. But it is an interlaced network of factors to prevent Gerrimander, limit campaign donations, install independent electoral registration and polling networks and thats just the start "Who watches the Watchers".. That America doesnt have all of those things is a shame. That American has NONE of those things is planned corruption..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman as a non American I'm often gobsmacked at how the fitting system is organised... He we have an electoral Commission that is totally outside of political control that sets electoral boundaries based on population numbers only.... They also are in charge of elections, which are compulsory to vote in and always held on a Saturday...

@Convivial Exactly😷
It's a perfect "issue" throughout the West, for everyone into virtue signaling and the status quo.

The problem here is not corruption. That exists on both sides of the house. Its just that the current administration has turned into a public spectacle at the Olympic level.. In truth are not offered a voting option betweengood and bad, either way. They are offered a voting option between probably incompetent and definitely actively fraudulent..😷

@Convivial Both your points are accurate. Its all a matter of degree. All governments are corrupt at some level. America had a "bias"built into the Constitution and Bill or rights as well as the foundation of the Fed that left hole to be exploited. And they have always been to some level. But when caught (which wasnt often) people were held accountable. These things were done where they didnt attract attention or scrutiny. The current administration has removed the check and balances and openly celebrates what the law still calls fraud. But the laws are deaf... Why would anyone NOT be corrupt in America today?😷
Convivial · 26-30, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I think the simple answer is the guardrails have been proven to be made of paper machie.... The laws are there and maybe imperfect but are not being enforced and yes I'm looking at you congress... As the saying goes a fish rots from the head down...
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Convivial Indeed. And you have the perfect example right now in Lindsey Graham. A more hypocritical and corrupt individual I cannot conceive of.. Having died, the Republicans have nominated his sister of all people. Someone who had to know him better than almost anyone, to continue the same line. And if the polls are to be believed, SHE MAY STILL WIN after everything he did publicly, with the family connection and the parties endorsement. I have to question the reasoning ability of American voters at this point..😷

I definitely agree. It's time to start seeing these people being held accountable and going to prison.

The picture for this group is perfect. Have you seen M: Il figlio del secolo yet? The danger is still out there, and I fear it much more than stupidity and corruption. But lets indeed hope that the electorate has indeed some memory left, yes.

@Convivial i wouldn't call that pride. I had real pride in what i did. I really dont think the grifters think that way. They just want to accumulate more wealth regardless of who they hurt.

@samueltyler2 I agree with you but it's what they cherish, to be above the rest of us
