You understand the whole world was already assessing tariffs on American goods and this is just a way to level the playing field, right? Used as policy tariffs are a disaster. Used as a short-term weapon, tariffs are effective.

@redredred Is that why the dollar is tanking?
Baremine · 70-79, C
@LosSantosNPC no that is all democrats
@Baremine Of course it is. Convenient

@LosSantosNPC This undeniably causes uncertainty in world markets. Financial markets prefer almost anything to uncertainty. The dollar will react but my prediction is it will be brief.

@redredred They are a disaster, and Trump did not use them as short-term leverage the first time around. They were still in place when Biden came to office and many stuck.

@SunshineGirl nevertheless, we persisted! The American pioneer spirit can never be suppressed for long.

@redredred What Trump has done is absolutely not
Trump has fabricated (using a braindead formula) supposed tariffs charged on US imports by different countries, which he then uses to justify charging absurd "reciprocal" tariffs.
Let's take one example.
In Trump's list, he claims that the European Union charges 39% tariffs on US goods. This is quite simply untrue. According to the WTO, the average EU tariff across the board is about 5%, and according the European Commission, the average tariff on goods traded between the US and the EU is about 1% on both sides. As you can see, Trump's 39% number is an outrageous lie. He has made similar mendacious claims about the other countries in his list (which includes, by the way, an island inhabited only by penguins).
See the Reuters summary here: https://www.reuters.com/markets/eu-prepare-countermeasures-us-reciprocal-tariffs-says-eu-chief-2025-04-03/#:~:text=The%20full%20list%20of%20economies,about%201%25%20for%20both%20sides.
What Trump is doing is imposing a ridiculous tax on American consumers, for no logical reason whatsoever.

@SunshineGirl Trump-1 was kept busy dodging the Russia-Russia lies and our weaponized DOJ.
@Heartlander The DOJ wasn't wraponized, all Trump had to do was return some papers... unlike all the other politicians, he refused.
You refuse, they come after you...
That's true with any and all citizens

@Heartlander Ho-hum, if only those pesky judges hadn't been so discourteous as to call out Trump's illegal activity, everything would have worked out just fine 🤣
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@GerOttman Persisted? Or ignored the lessons of history? Billions of dollars of tax money was needlessly wasted on compensating farmers for loss of livelihood during Trump 1.

@SunshineGirl We're not history takers we are history Makers!!

@redredred It’s like when you go out to lunch every day with a coworker and always pick up the tab, then after years and years you say: “let’s split the tab” and the coworker gets all bent out of shape. To make it worse, your spouse hears what you did and and puts out a yard sign with a message saying she’s married to an AH :)
