25% Tariffs on Canada ? Think VERY carefully...

Former prime minister Jean Chrétien says U.S. president-elect Donald Trump is likely to walk back his threat of punishing tariffs and the resulting trade war with Canada, because the Americans are too reliant on a number of Canadian exports, namely in the energy sector.

"He's apparently said this morning that he does not need our electricity. Fine," Chrétien said in an exclusive broadcast interview with CTV Question Period, airing Sunday. "If he wants us to cut off electricity, he would have to walk up the Trump Tower with candles to go to his office, because the state of New York relies a lot on electricity coming from Canada."

True I worked in the power industry and knew engineers from that region and yes NYC will black out without Canada. It’s a huge dense load.

@TheShanachie Yes our former Prime Minister knows what he is talking about

My bet is its a strategy to level the playing field where the US has been at inequitable tariff situations for decades. If countries refuse to move toward that goal, the tariff on their goods will go up. Basic negotiation .. and seems an affront only to those on the unfairly advantaged side of the relationship for so long. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't .. might be some pain for all to bring change either way.

@BrandNewMan Well we already have a trade deal with the States. I think Trump should honour it. He's just a bully who needs an enemy. Shame he has to make his closest ally and trading partner his enemy when there are so many real enemies. I guess he likes bulling smaller countries. Typical. I don't really understand how Trudeau resigning would be an example ?
@JimboSaturn Lol .. what we think and $6 each will get coffee at Starbucks

@BrandNewMan Ya, I'm still not really understanding you.

I think its important that we know about the source of what we are talking about.. The James Bay Power project is what keeps the lights on in NY State including NYC...

Tariffs don't work because if the U.S. puts tariffs on another country's products, that country will retaliate by placing tariffs on American products. No gain at all. And it creates hostility.

@badminton And many 'American' products aren't - instead they're Chinese. Like all Apple products. In fact every single mobile phone and tablet and PC device is now made in China. Only genuine 'made in usa' products can be called 'American'. I don't think the USA has an Aussie-style food labelling regulation where the percentage of Australian ingredients has to be indicated and calling something 'Australian made' is governed by legislation.
@badminton There already are tariffs on US products .. and at higher rate than the US applies .. with many countries. There are a rather limited number of free trade agreements.

There is little point warning trump or America for their own good. Sometimes you have to let the child put its hand on the stove and get burned before it will understand something is hot..😷

Trump wants to take over canada and make it's provinces into more US states, thereby creating a seamless mega-country between mainland USA and Alaska. It's a megalomaniac's wet dream.

@Emiliomarti Trump has an established history of erratic actions. I'm betting he is already planning a military invasion of Greenland and keeping the plan in a 'high state of readiness' almost to the same level of integration as the nuclear launch authorisation process.

I don't think this will happen- also cause Canada is part of the Nato-
But let's not take lightly his speeches-
This would be the same mistake that many nations made with A. Hitler...!

@justanothername 24 million pissed off citizens?
justanothername · 51-55, M
@pdqsailor1 1 million or a hundred million makes no difference to Trump. He has zero empathy for anyone so the concept of “pissed off” has no meaning to him unless, it’s Trump that’s pissed off. Then it’s Trump vengeance against those who pissed him off.

@pdqsailor1 Not much different to our population here in Oz. There's talk that Australia could become more states of the USA if the Liberal/National Party (aka Oz version of the Trump Republican party) win our next federal election - nothing could make me puke more. No offence.
