@ElwoodBlues As a Canadian, I am not sure how Americans register to vote. In Canada, when you file your income tax return, there is the option to add yourself to the voters list.

A federal standard called "Real ID" tightened the requirements for obtaining a driver's license in every state. It shows lawful presence in most states, citizenship in a few.

Republicans recently tried to pass a law called the "SAVE Act" with much much stiffer requirements to register to vote. In particular, Real ID isn't acceptable.

What's happening here is republicans are trying their hardest to keep people, especially the poor, from registering to vote.

@chrisCA Varies by state. In California, you go to the Registrar's office, provide ID (usually a driver's license is sufficient), and evidence of residence for local elections (usually utility bills sent to you with the address of residency). After that it becomes pretty much an online update on change of address, etc. Voting in person requires you to sign in next to your name in the Registrar's roll for that precinct. That's all that I recall; it has been decades since I voted in person. The mail-in option always has been available to the military, those absent for other reasons, the elderly and infirm. It was expanded to anyone who wanted it during the pandemic, along with adding the option of locked drop-by boxes at public offices such as courthouses and libraries. In those cases the envelope (not the ballot itself) must be signed (or signed and witnessed by someone else in the case of inability) for comparison tot he electoral rolls.

In my experience most of the really ugly stuff wasn't the norm. We just did what we were trained to do and hope to make it to next day.

To me it was never anything but a war. Whether right or wring I believed the domino effect was a real thing. I felt at the time we were keeping all of Indochina from falling to the communists. With 20-20 hindsight I can see where it was foolish to think we could achieve those goals.

Like others have said I wouldn't take anything for the experience of what I went through. But I would never do it over again.

Hundreds if not thousands of Recruitment offices set up in every state to handle and keep up with the ages of the males. males were **automatically** notified before their 18th birthdayby mail to report to the recruitment office after their 18th birthday. I can't get any simpler than that.

You're going on and on; now trying to give me information on how it started, how it operates. I Never said you didn't have knowledge of the draft, I use the word automatically which you disagree, with simple as that. I know how to draft worked too, when many males were running to Canada to avoid it and not go to jail. Muhammad Ali lost much of his boxing career because of the draft until the supreme Court overturned in 1971, 4 years was lost.

@Charity What we have is a semantic issue. You keep referring to an automatic draft, conflating registration and draft as if they were the same. The way you phrase it implies to later generations that you turned 18 and you were drafted (conscripted) into the military. Registration and the draft were two separate actions, and neither were automatic in today's sense of the word.

You reject the draft before the 1970s was automatic, do so that's your business, your prerogative. You reject the only difference is it was done on paper then and it's in a computer now so so.

There is no confusion on what it is to register and what is the draft. Why do you think I put those links on, let them do the talking.

And now I'm going to take it further a male that was born before the 1970s was automatically / automatically / automatically / **drafted** into the US military service even before they came of age. The coming of age just made it official and one had to go an enlist.

Webster's definition automatic: largely and wholly involuntary ---- what male baby, toddler, teenager, volunteered for induction into the selective service? Yet all males names and birth dates were automatically kept on file for military service.
