Going back to the sixties and prior years when men were automatically inducted into the draft at the age of 18.

No surprise, if he could he'd go back to slavery

@Charity will this draft include trumps children .. or bone spurs all over again
the draft was to make congress and there families kids to be part of the pain of war ..

@markinkansas

For his youngest son if not bone spurs then if it'll be something else that will keep him out of the draft.

To initiate the draft again, if he indeed does it means he is planning on long-term wars, and I say wars - he's planning on putting troops in Venezuela reports have said (as a starter). Hope the man doesn't try to take Greenland or Canada.

@Charity It was not automatic registration in the past. At age 18, it was a requirement to register with your LOCAL draft board made up of older members of your community, who also heard your applications for student deferments, exemptions for health or conscientious objections on religious grounds. That led to the political abuses of the systems; otoh, it provided some local control. There was a penalty for not registering, but it was not automatic or controlled nationally.

@dancingtongue recruiting officers used to come the the high school . just to get the seniors to sign up and joining the service was a way to leave home after school ..
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@markinkansas But that is for enlistment, and has always been there, draft or no draft. The military draft was not a voluntary solicitation.

@dancingtongue ya do they still go to schools.. ya they might . ya gave me some more to think on.

@dancingtongue

We didn't have computers back then ---- the type of automation was done by foot and hand and mouth on paper with pin so when a male became 18 males were to **automatically** put their name on the list.

I was alive and kicking and fully aware of the draft and family members who faced it.

the draft is mandatory enrollment / enrollment is enlistment - there was no difference when you turned 18 you signed up that was the law and if you didn't they would come at you one way or another. And the only way you had a possibility to get out of it was schooling, sickness, and at one point being flat-footed. Trump use bone spurs, then his daddy was rich.

@Charity I am quite clear on it, having lived through it. Student deferment, two years of active duty. And I believe flat-footedness is still a disqualifier. My son was given a medical discharge for flat footedness, but then that was back in the 70's.

@dancingtongue Also two years of mandatory ROTC which was required at land grant public universities at that time.
