I think this talking point was co-opted by Clinton and became a joke under W.

Under Trump, this brand of fiscal conservatism only occasionally shows up as a rationale for populist driven cultural regression or destroying impediments to crony capitalism and corruption.

It does sort of make sense. Trumpism isn't really about conserving much of anything except greed, corruption, and selfishness. All these pesky liberal laws laws and norms like truth, loving your neighbor and doing into others are for suckers, unless, of course they benefit "me" and not "thee.'

No the Republicans are NOT fiscally responsible. Due to their votes in congress the U.S. is now officially insolvent. We are paying $one trillion a year, just on interest. Let that sink in.

This disastrous situation came about due to giving corporations and billionaires huge tax cuts (which they used almost entirely for stock buy-backs.) This was grossly irresponsible policy.

Also, hugely excessive defense spending. If we want to have a billion dollar a year defense budget we simply have to pay for it, up front with taxes.

Our huge federal deficit is entirely the fault of the Republicans.

Thune isn't so makes life difficult. No matter what the house passes, thune doesn't pickup the bill.

The last time the U.S. federal budget was balanced was in 1969. Since then, consistent annual deficits have been run by both parties. While the Clinton administration (Democrat) achieved budget surpluses in the late 1990s, the national debt has increased under both Democratic and Republican administrations, regardless of which party controlled Congress.
Fiscally conservative for the population. As always!

That would be a "NO". In fact no one in American politics is fiscally rational, let alone conservative..😷

You can't balance something that is so out of whack when it's handed to you. 🤦‍♂

@pdockal Not just congress but the presidents priority legislation

@Spotpot

The President generally cannot spend money without Congress passing an appropriation, as the Constitution grants Congress the "power of the purse". Limited exceptions include spending during severe national emergencies, using previously delegated statutory authority, or utilizing funds in "mandatory" spending categories, though all must follow the Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

@pdockal So the president trough the congress and the president signs the legislation.
