Technically, Greenland is not a NATO nation. But its security is a part of Denmark's defense commitments. Historically, Denmark failed to meet its NATO commitment of 2% of GDP, which is now up to 5%. The US, on the other hand, supplies 70% of the NATO budget, and 65% of the weaponry and military equipment. The US is, in essence, NATO.
I love hearing the spoiled children in the EU talking about kicking the US out of NATO. Putin and Xi are probably whacking off to the thought of it.
@Lostwithielle Ohhh, it absolutely is Denmark's responsibility. The Danes sayeth so, which is hilarious since they can't/won't meet their NATO funding commitment.
Plus of course Greenland has never been under threat of invasion.
Never?
Greenland sits on the North American tectonic plate, so it is part of North America geographically. It's geopolitical significance to the US is tremendous. First attempts to purchase it, go back to 1867. Russia and China drooling over Greenland. You don't think they're a threat?
Denmark couldn't defend themselves yet alone Greenland. They have yet to meet the 2% NATO contribution goal. So what good are they? They can't defend themselves and rely on the US taxpayer. Yet they're so proud of their socialized universal health care. Why? Again, because the US tax payers cover its defense costs. So they can F off for all I care.
With "friends" like that who have never met their committments, who needs enemies?
The US is a NATO country. There's no writing in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization about declaring Article 5 on a NATO ally, much less precedent to go off of. The alliance was formed under the assumption that something like this would never happen.
They could call in help from the EU (which, there's a lot of overlap there) but the EU doesn't have the blue water naval power to protect Greenland, either.
I dont think we have to get too deeply concerned about this long term.. Doesnt anyone remember Vietnam? Or Afghanistan? Any US incursion into Greenland will be another duck out of water invasion totally unsuited to the invaders personnel, equipment and tactics and without the support of the locals. It wont end well for America. But it never does. They must be getting used to it by now..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman That's not going to be at all comparable. Greenland only has a population of 60K people. There's not really much for a local resistance to counter an occupation. And unlike Vietnam or Afghanistan, we aren't looking to install puppets we're looking to take it over. It's a different game.
Any conflict will see tragic loss of life for no good reason. That should be concerning enough. Though longer term, the damage done to NATO and European alliances is massive. Everyone is significantly weakened by this just through loss of trust alone.
Not only that, other large nations will see both Russia and the US engaged in wars of aggression for territory. We could try to call rogue state when it is only one nation doing it. But with two, it becomes normalized. How could we judge China for going after Taiwan if we invade Greenland?
The US doesn't need to be successful in taking Greenland to do long term and significant damage. It's already being done.
@ViciDraco I think we may be on the same side of this discourse. But for different reasons. So I am content to stick with my comments. They hold true all the way back to the war of independence.😷
It doesn't matter if Denmark or the NATO intend to defend Greenland.
War is profitable for US politics and corporations. It always has been.
And if it is not Greenland, it will be some other country.
Just like how they treat their inner issues. If it is not blacks, it is east asians, if it not east asians, it is muslims..if it is not muslims, it is lgbtq+...
Always a particular group of people or country they have a problem with.
It's reverse thinking. I'm afraid that we've entered a new era. If one can't defend oneself, one needs to give offerings to a god. Of course, them gods are monsters
@Lostwithielle Yup, that's what the MSM, Democrats and some European leaders claim.
I'm not saying Trump is 100% correct here. However, I am not taking the word of the same people who lie, scream and stomp their feet anytime Trump says or does something.
Wouldn't it be interesting if Trump's whole thing was to get NATO to add military to Greenland? And this was the way he did it?
@SumKindaMunster from what I can gather, that has now happened, to the delight of Denmark which is only too happy to have help defending Greenland. But let’s be honest here. Greenland has never been at serious risk of invasion.
