Back in 2022 the Garland DOJ (Biden admin) announced charges against a fraud ring in Minnesota for what turned out to be the largest case of Covid Relief fraud charged.
This was a program set up by the Trump admin that was criticized at the time for how little oversight there was of the awards and how likely a target for fraud it would be
The DoJ ended up getting about 70 odd convictions from this case. While several of them were Somali immigrants this was not a Somali ring or ran by Somalis (relevant later)
During the 2024 the right tried to use this attack Waltz for lack of oversight, but it didnt really land
Recently this has resurfaced as part of a reason to criticize the Somali community in Minnesota as part of the right’s anti-immigration rhetoric. “There were some Somalis involved” became “it was a Somali crime ring” became “Somalis are criminals” became “Somalis way of life is incompatible with American values and we should get rid of them”
Last week some youtuber dickhead stormed a clinic outside of opening hours demanding to “see the children” and when he was kicked out presented the video of proof of the fraud.
That video has gone viral on the right with them now all up in arms about a main stream press covering for the Dems/Somalis and why it took a youtuber to uncover the fraud, not realizing this is a 3 year old story that was covered plenty in real time.
The immediate pivot by lots on the right to say “we’re not racist we just care about fraud” is of course undercut by their complete lack of interest in any of the fraud being done or excused by the party they support. No concern has been raised about any of the pardons Trump has given. There is no concern about the fact that one of the most senior members of the GOP Senate was responsible for what was at the time the largest fraud in history, costing his company over $2b in penalties
We now have Kash’s DoJ publicly tacking credit for the convictions earned under Garland and supposedly credible reporters advancing Kash’s line that they are investigating something the Garland DoJ burried for political reasons (Herridge is one of those people who has a long record of being a hack yet somehow is still treated seriously)

they are now linking this “hidden fraud” to the political assassinations in Minnesota this summer. They have already reframed a RW christian nationalist as a “Waltz appointed lefty” and are now claiming he killed state lawmakers who had uncovered the fraud and were about to expose Waltz and the Dems
The Feds have now blocked all funds to the state of Minnesota for child poverty over concerns over fraud they are pretending has only just been uncovered.

@Northwest I understood. That was also a claim Trump made during his last administration. I posted about it and marveled how unpresidential he was to publicly speculate about a lawmaker ‘s personal life (because it was only speculation at that point, I still don’t think any proof has been found).
