I honestly can't see the US keeping its developed status in the next 10 years or so.

I do wonder if countries can lose status, I've never heard of it but it could happen. To be fair, I think the whole classification system is wrong, I'm not saying under developed countries are bad, so this isn't me placing a value judgement. Just that I wonder if we're going to lose our status due to a huge number of observations.

-We don't really have resources, we take and consume. Due to Trump, we have a lot of weakened relations with countries and other countries are working with others who they normally wouldn't otherwise.

Not even down to just Trump but our choices in the past, we do have our enemies because a lot of that isn't fixable even if we wanted to.

-We are behind on a lot of things. Education ranks lowest among developed countries. Infrastructure is behind or now under developed or non existent. Construction sites aren't being built either, 100s of videos of sites being abandoned after trump's extreme deportation plan.

In most countries they have things like high speed rails and I've seen some really wicked stuff from Japan. Other countries are working on things like different energy efficiency, combating climate change and experimenting with food to try to feed the massive population in interesting ways and are largely more innovative by far.

-Our health programs, science and other programs are non existent. They were bad before Trump but Trump ended cancer research, vaccines, ended nursing as a professional degree.

Other countries are taking in our scientists because they are currently being punished by the US. There was news that hundreds of scientists are leaving. I keep up with technology and other things and what some other countries are doing is way more advanced by far.

- For jobs, around the world various programs are being initiated. They've already successfully ran small UBI experiments, gave people 4 day working weeks, sick leave, childcare and low to free transportation.

I dunno.. the point is that I don't really see our status lasting. It's not that I find under developed countries as bad, just that we seem to be heading that way ourselves. Because as other countries get more advanced, we will get further and further behind. My estimation is that we are at least 5 to 6 years behind everyone else and our current administration is accelerating it with things like ending science and nursing. So by the time Trump gets out of office we might be 7 or 8 years behind everyone else.

All you say is true, and unfortunately, we are farther behind than we realize, but that can only be seen if one goes to foreign countries to visit. Even the Arab countries that we thought were full of poor Bedouin people, actually have new and better infrastructure including roads and architecture, and many now have bullet trains.
It's only my opinion, that America has just become a spoiled nation, falsely believing that we can never be replaced, but the truth is that the "buying power" that the American consumer once possessed, can be transferred to any peoples around the world, and the future is not in The West.
@calicuz PPP shows the buying power, that's why we prefer GDP.

What a great post, well thought out and these are very concerning topics you brought up. I was going to reply to you here but, ended up getting pretty long-winded and just made a new post of my own. Happy to hear your thoughts.

As the middle class shrinks and more people are poorer it gives the wealthiest more power and even more money. It's part of the plan.

Reagan took office believing that the middle class had gained too much power in America and he did something about it. Study Reaganomics and Reagans war on the middle class.

@SatanBurger After WWII a large thriving middle class arose for the first time in America. As their numbers grew they gained more wealth and their political clout grew along with it. They were electing people who would for the first time look out for them over those at the top. Unions thrived, wages increased and, Oh My God, a heavily top weighted income tax was implemented. The middle class was making enough not only to live better but help those not as fortunate live better too. For a while political power was no longer in the hands of only a few who were looking out for each other. That is when America was really Great.

I won't go into lengths here but a group representing the wealthiest Americans devised a plan to elect Reagan, end the middle class and bring back power to the wealthy. This group is known as Reagans Kitchen Cabinet. (not to be confused with other Kitchen Cabinets from the past)

Trumpism is a big lie and the next step in this process. His ignorant cult has bought into it. They have cut their own throats but just haven't bled out yet. But they will.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@MoveAlong Reaganism as well gave birth to the heritage foundation which authored today's project 2025 that Trump is currently implementing. 😔
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@MoveAlong I didn't know all that before about Reagan, I'm not surprised but at least I know we haven't always been like this.

I think simply by merit of the size of the economy, America will continue to sit at the top table. But failing to invest in education, public infrastructure, renewable energy and health during the good times is so short-sighted. Like Germany, America may find itself with a balanced budget but crumbling, inefficient services
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I agree. But I think there will be a new state brought into being for "Post Developed Nations"".. The other factor we havent had to deal with before is the global economy. Ironically something brought into being by America, post WW2, although experimented in by the romans to a small extent..😷
Status can shrink from 1st world to developing but the US is faaaaaaaarrr from it. Think of it this way, California alone has a bigger economy than all 3rd world nations combined. Now if you’re asking weather China, or Brazil can surpass the US in the next 50 years? That is absolutely possible, but we’ll still be a 1st world country.

@Elessar it would take decades, maybe a century from this point. The wage gap might be enlarging significantly, but nowhere near Third World levels. There’s a reason why the world is still clamoring to get in into this country..
Elessar · 31-35, M
@Notmesam There's a whole plethora of awful options that don't necessarily involve becoming third world though

Also immigration isn't really a good indicator: there's always someone having it worse
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
We are indeed transitioning from 1st world to developing world rather quickly.

'Developed Status' is only based on the perception of the country who's doing the status check.

If America is doing that status check, then America's perception of another country's development is based on how America perceives itself on the world stage.

In other words, compared to the USA, America asks itself how another country compares?

If that country walks and talks and looks just like the USA in form and in content, then America deduces that the country in question must be a highly developed Nation, just like the USA is!

I mean seriously, I have to stop now because I'm actually starting to laugh at where this will end up in that fantasy land of how the USA perceives itself!

@whowasthatmaskedman
The American model that other countries were shown as being the gold standard of what a developed country looks like, were not told that the American model they were drooling over was built on borrowed money that was never paid back.

This of course means that the USA others could see from afar, wasn't actually owned by Americans... it was owned by the bank.... and still is to this day.

Therefore, if what's parked in our driveways isn't paid for, then it isn't our's. What the world was looking at when they saw America's lights glittering on that far horizon was a grotesque facade of reality, an abject illusion of fact, no different than what one witnesses when one walks down the streets of Las Vegas... just a plethora of glitter and fake reality that is very transient in nature.

@whowasthatmaskedman

Yes, everything is limited when it's built on credit, and the others want longer sustainability.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@swirlie All quite true. And even worse, American consumerism is selling the people the iodea that debt is good and that the trappings of wealth are necessary to be successful and therefore happy.. We circle back to the Kardashians.😷

You answer your question in the first paragraph. One word... Rome.... Ended up being hoisted on their own belief of their invinciblity

@FoxyGoddess Thanks for looking this up, this was interesting to read and I'm happy about India. India has it rough since colonialism so it's good they are gaining.

We're too selfish and greedy.

We're like babies.

We haven't been a nation for more than a spit of human existence. Our civilization deserves to fall. We screwed up when we killed the natives and still had the nerve to develop privilege.

I personally don't care. I'm a survivor if comes down to it and these fluffy suits are nothing without money. Money doesn't mean anything if there's no resources. Even if I die off, good for Earth.
CultOfPersonality · 36-40, M
Yes, a country can have its status downgraded
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@CultOfPersonality We will for sure in the future, my prediction is the next 10 years to get officially down graded, which seems like a long time but isn't in all respect. There's no way to catch up to other countries now, it's too much.
ron122 · 41-45, M
Must have taken you all day sitting on the couch stuffing your face to write this.

@SatanBurger
Well, now MAGA supporters know how hundreds of very prominent business owners and bank CEOs feel from as far back as the 1970's who got duped, screwed over, lied to and defrauded by Trump Corp of New York, led by their 'frontman' Donald J. Trump who was being Directed by his father the Late Fred Trump, Co-Founder of Trump Corp in 1933.
ron122 · 41-45, M
@swirlie You sure get triggered easily.🤣🍿 Typical democrat name calling by the way. You follow orders very well dude.
