When Sunak was PM I marvelled at just how bad he was at politics. Now Starmer has outdone even him. I think there's a lesson in there that people who weren't politicians in the first place really aren't suited to the highest office in the land.

@Burnley123 Many Conservatives also were not ok with him pressuring someone to step down to force a bi-election so he could run yet again in a guaranteed riding after losing his seat in a landslide.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow You'd know better than me but it seems like the Canadian conservatives are stuck between their traditional neoliberalism and rightwing populism. They can't go full MAGA because if how much the Orange One is trying to screw Canada. They can't not do because the status quo is unpopular.

@Burnley123 The Conservatives in Canada are a mess for a reason. And your observation is actually very much true although it predates Trump by several years. He is just pouring petrol on the fire.
Imagine that the British Tories get destroyed in the next election. Like reduced to single digit seats level of loss. From there they barely manage to get back to double digits for several years.
Now imagine someone in the Tories assists in a hostile takeover of the Tories by UKIP. That is essentially what happened with the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance 20 years ago.
And imagine that for the last decade the Tories are run by the Nigel Farrage equivalents. That is the Canadian Tories on the national stage.
They are two very different parties functioning under a single banner.
Alberta had nearly an identical situation happen on the Provincial level a few years ago and it has been a basketcase ever since.
Trump has merely amplified the issues behind the fake unity on the right.

Looking on from Australia,it seems that way - I notice that Sir Keir now has a worried, concerned look on his face every time I see him on the news here.
It is interesting to see how detached from the average person on the street both parties are.
And here I was thinking that you were in Labour's favour...

@HootyTheNightOwl I was a party member until I recently left to join the Greens. Though my politics and my opinion on Starmer have never changed.

please no Reform UK 🤞
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Hireath Labour in power until the next election with a big majority. However, then they will be in trouble.
I'm recently left labour to join the Green Party.

To their credit apparently helping Trump murder fishermen is a red line. The namesake of their movement Tony Blair probably would not be so principled.
Then again Starmer and Macron both seem to think they are fighting the Crimean War and both love to posture like they both still have the armies of their 19th century empires.😂

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I would agree but the Venezuela thing has got almost no publicity here. Our economy is a mess and Starmer has no answers. He's pissed off the left and the right.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I wonder if Labour will speed run the last few years of Tory chaos with fifty thousand PMs in an eyeblink before the fash take over.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@CountScrofula I don't think it will but Wes Streeting (the most likely successor) the s the Blairite's Blairite and has been a war with the healthcare unions. The soft left doesn't really have a candidate and the Corbyn wing has been decimated
A left revival isn't going to happen in labour, which is why Im no longer a member

@Burnley123 A party named literally "labour" hating unions is something that'd be too far even for my country lol
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Elessar It's Labour in name only.

On the plus side, seems as if Nigel Farage is now a regular at Mar-a-Lago parties.

@Elessar A good question but probably not. The Parliamentary labour party will get behind a new leader.
My prediction is that Labour will stagger in for the next three years before losing the next election to a Tory/Reform coalition. That is not good

@Burnley123 Isn't the green party a viable option too?
