Chilling.
That repoert shows that whatever it is, the real motive for wanting to attack a foreign country is not clear. Everyone will know only if the President explains it. Speculation does not help.
The constitutional aspect is murky: does the American President have the authority to launch attacks on a foreign country without full Congress knowledge and approval?
Is such attacking legal internationally? I expect the USA's enemies would find great propaganda value in it; and her allies are not likely to support her.
Will the strikes take place? That doesn't seem clear either. Readiness to attack does not mean it will happen, but Venezuela has not threatened the USA. This is the US President wanting to strike without clear purpose, planning or governmental permission.
Though her government ought be working with the US to crush the drugs trade; preferably without the cold-blooded murders those video clips show.
If the order to attack is illegal under international law, would the US Services top-brass refuse to carry it out? If so, then what?
What is the likely result? No advantage to the USA, loss of life among both Americans and Venezuelans, no ending of the drugs-running. Possibly turning most of the South American countries against her; to the delight of Russia and China, and strategic advantage of the latter.

@markinkansas Yes... that could be.
President Xi has frequently boasted he wants Taiwan. Never mind its residents who, by and large, seem unenthusiastic about it.

China will invade Taiwan regardless of America presence in the region. China controls the USA in all facets of Trade and Commerce and China will do what China wants to do with Taiwan anytime China is ready.

@swirlie so much easy when we are not on that side of the world... why not take advantage of it

I rather doubt that this is about the oil. The US is gulping oil from Canada and really doesn't need the oil from Venezuela. I also don't think this is about drugs. I think this is about evil men trying to show they can still win a war even after they have lost pretty much every war they got into since 1945.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@hippyjoe1955 I have not had that experience personally, no, as I was never in the Services; but there have been cases of British servicemen charged under civilian law for going too far.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@ArishMell Yes you are right. If the military wants to hang you out to dry it will. If it wants to protect you it will. It is quite whimsical that way. Of course at Kent State the National Guard was doing what its political masters wanted so it was protected. Had it sufficiently sullied the escutcheon of the political elite the guardsmen would have been charged with murder.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@hippyjoe1955 Oh - I take your point entirely.

Been saying that oil in Venezuela is the reason all along. It's more profitable than narcotics.
Why isn't Trump dealing with the fentanyl problem in Mexico? Which is the worst narcotic.
He doesn't care about drugs unless they can bring him a profit... like Big pharma, which rarely deal in narcotics.

Black tar / black gold , same thing

It's kind of about oil. The politics part was important.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Nonsense. The US is the number 1 producer of oil, over Saudi Arabia and Russia. We don't need Venezuela's oil.
1995 called - they want this talking point back.

@SumKindaMunster The US is also the number 1 abuser of drugs. Stop buying illegal drugs and there will be no problem.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SumKindaMunster The USA may not need it for itself but is the argument actually one of competition for exports to other nations?
ImperialAerosolKidFromEP · 51-55, M
I'm not even sure it's that noble
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Of course it’s for the oil

Once again Congress will not do their job.

That's why the US invaded Iraq as well, not for alleged weapons of mass destruction which were never found, but for the oil which of course most definitely was found!
markinkansas · 61-69, M
@swirlie and fracking can pollute the water table ..
swirlie · 31-35
@markinkansas
Yes, for sure! Fracking is only used as a last resort but is more expensive to do than what the value of the oil is worth, which simply means that the US is desperate for crude oil.
