About The Extra 10% Tariff On Canada

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario.

The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran Friday night during the first game of the World Series.

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform as he flew aboard Air Force One to Malaysia.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”

It was unclear what legal authority Trump would use to impose the additional import taxes. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when the 10% hike would come into effect, and whether it would apply to all Canadian goods.

It is unclear what authority he has for any of this trade war. Even supposing one believes in tariffs as economic policy, they are not supposed to be imposed, raised, lowered, on the whims of one man. But as I've said before, Trump could not be doing any of this without the spineless collusion of so many around him.

@ThePatientAnarchist And yet, here we are. Hope all those who voted him in are enjoying it all.
@ThePatientAnarchist LOL

DJT couldn't make money with CASINOS, which are like licenses to print it. His "mentor" was Roy Cohn, an evil, twisted guy who bragged about destroying people. Do you think DJT even CAREs about legality?

He cares about pain to others.

He an unhappy, uneducated child whose father made sure he would never run the company, and who keeps trying to impress his dead papa and make him proud.

American businessmen have been avaricious, but the destruction of the premier trading status of this country and divesting it of its empire was never seen as being in their interests. I hope most still think this way. I wonder when those who are NOT billionaires will find their voices.

@SomeMichGuy He bragged and delighted in destroyed people's lives and firing tens of thousands of people.

Like the Presidency is the Apprentice, and that's the job he thinks he still holds, so anything for the ratings.

I kissed a Mexican watermelon and I liked it!

About 6 months ago I stopped buying US products.
At that time I was a little worried that there would be things I would have to do without and I would be paying a lot more for my food. But it worked out that I can still buy any food I want at a reasonable price.
I figure this new 10% tariff increase will show the rest of the world that it is not a good Idea to try and negotiate with Trump - so just find new trading partners like Canada did and all will be well.
Cheers!

@swirlie You're free to post, not insult. Fact, you can only post if you can prove your allegations, starting with you producing references of your claims of what Carney said.

Even if that extra 10% did go into effect, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford will still be laughing their asssesss off at Trump for years to come!

Even while this was all happening in Canada and Trump was responding accordingly, Carney and Ford were seen smiling and laughing because they were both in on it.

PM Carney did however say to Doug Ford that "perhaps we should take down the ads?"... to which Ford responded, "I'll do that for sure on Monday, right after the second game, Mister Prime Minister!", to which they both agreed.

The thing is, that 10% will have absolutely no net effect on Canada because Canadians will not be paying that extra 10% even if it's implemented... but Americans will be paying it when they purchase those Canadian-made goods that the US imported from Canada!

Another thing that's worthy of note here is that exactly 24 hours prior to all this happening, Prime Minister Mark Carney got on National TV and announced to Canada and the entire world (including the USA), that effective immediately, Canada will no longer be doing business with the USA as Trading Partners.

It was an unscheduled special announcement that was made by Prime Minister Carney which most interpreted as being the sign that Trade talks had become SO dysfunctional and splintered between Canada and Donald Trump that all bets were off between Canada and the USA.

It is really the global announcement that Carney made about Canada no longer doing business with the USA that sparked Trump's angered response for the extra 10%, not the Ronald Reagan ad that ran during the World Series.

@swirlie

No, that is NOT what Carney said on TV. Carney said that Canada's Trade relationship with the USA is now over and that Canada will no longer be doing business with the USA as Trading Partners. The End.

Relationship with US will never be the same is quite different from relationship with the USA is now over

I'm sure even you can understand the difference, if you try to read. Or watch:

And this right before he boarded a flight on his way to Asia earlier today.

That was not the speech that Carney gave on National TV almost a week ago, which is the speech my original post is referring to.

This speech you quote here with a video is a speech Carney gave out on the airport tarmac immediately prior to leaving for Asia less than 24 hours ago.

But you lie, because this is what you said in your original comment:

all this happening was yesterday.

Try again, I quoted the entire Carney address prior to taking off, as well as the speech he gave during the week. Pay attention, but seeing you'e so certain, provide a fucking reference. Here's what it will be: the speech I provided a reference to here.

Let's also skip that imaginary scenario of Ford and Carney laughing their asses off, because it never happened.

I’ve known conservatives and republicans all my life even though I’m a liberal by their definition. Until now, one common denominator with them has always been an admiration of Reagan. This new thing with them makes no sense, however the everyone else is wrong and one man is right feature of the current GOP is crazy.
swirlie · 31-35
@AbstractWave
That's why Trump doesn't like the video ad shown by Premier Doug Ford because it shows how even Reagan thought tariffs were a terrible idea that would doom America into total failure, which of course is exactly what tariffs are doing to the USA, in addition to Trump's own gross incompetence to act as President.
@swirlie Thank you.

Pretty sad when a whole group is so mad about <whatever> that they can't see ALL the signs of

Trump's own gross incompetence to act as President.

That's the perfect phrasing.

He's not merely messing up around the edges...
I’ve known conservatives and republicans all my life even though I’m a liberal by their definition.

Consider this, @AbstractWave:

TODAY's "GOP" now considers Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney to be "too liberal" for them...[b]they are lumped together with you![/i]

If that doesn't blow one's mind, I suppose nothing will.
