Local level politicians / office holders here have (of late) been reasonably good regardless of party affiliations. At a national level the big problems are too much Special Interests / Lobbying / PACs
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@thisguy20 Yeah my mom has been local Mayor twice. Municipal politicians can do good work.
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
@BorealPedant that's neat

WestonT · 18-21, M
It's interesting being part of the younger generation, as this is the time when I'm supposed to start caring about politics and voting and "participating in the democratic process", but I'm not seeing a whole lot of reason to regard most of this as anything other than self-serving, performative pandering that only helps those at the top stay at the top and does little for most of us.

I do think local politics is often more relevant to me than what's happening at the federal level, but even then all politicians are primarily concerned with their careers and donors and that will always come first. Sometimes they can help their community and their constituents, but that's secondary to furthering their career.

Federal politics is mostly just a game of inefficiency and vindictiveness. When the "adults in the room" are acting like children, it's hard to want to participate in any of this.
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@WestonT People say that this perspective is immature a lot of the time but I think you're dead right.

What do any of them offer for you personally? What opportunities will you have you'd otherwise be denied?

The best the Democrats offer is "we're not them" and the best the Republicans offer is getting rid of woke. Like which path leads to you with a good job and a stable home?
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
I think you see both sides in the right/left game for what they really are.

But in the US, people who are leaving both parties to become independents have learned the lesson - And they're the real majority now. Give them a little time.

Everything is broken.

But that doesn't mean nothing can be fixed.
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@GuiltyBiStander Who do you think they really are? This isn't a leading question, I probably agree with you. I think left and right are actual real concepts but the way they're used by political parties means it's just a cup and ball game and the ball is in the con artist's hand.
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
@BorealPedant

I think no one in the US with a clear memory of what Republicans or Democrats once stood for really recognizes either party today.

I'm not old enough to be part of that history, but what I see now totally disgusts me. The idea that hardcore MAGA supporters are true "conservatives" is ridiculous. And so-called progressives who think they can play identity politics while ignoring economic & social outcomes are anything but "liberal".

What are they ? I think they're scavengers fighting for whatever power they can grab for themselves right now, instead of trying to build a better future for anyone else.

But nothing that looks certain now will last. Both sides will be forced to reform by people who've finally had enough.
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@GuiltyBiStander I hope so. They REALLY don't want to. The Republicans are going full police state while the Democrats are basically just a fundraising grift at this point.
I'm sorry that your Canadian national government is handling you so poorly. In your confederation, the provinces have a big rôle; does your treat you well?
@BorealPedant Wrong.

The Democratic party wants universal health care. It would save us a massive amounts of money.

Are you from Alberta?
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@SomeMichGuy Kamala Harris and Joe Biden didn't run on it. Obama's best attempt was the ACA which entrenches the private model.

And yes, for my sins. Speaking of governments who hate public health care.
@BorealPedant
Kamala Harris and Joe Biden didn't run on it.

That doesn't mean Democrats don't want it.

We had a lot of money poured into lies about universal health care some years ago, some of them based upon strongly misrepresenting the Canadian health care system as it then stood.

And there are many people here who love their social programs but hate the word "socialism" due to things like the legacy of McCarthy and the СССР.

There is a LOT of money to be made on marking up care for the sick or elderly, and those businesses want their many pounds of flesh.

Alberta says it all...

Though my personal political beliefs are kept private, overall, I believe that career politicians as a whole are selfish, divisive and only pander to those who help stroke their ego or fill their pockets. I prefer someone who is not a career politician. We all have flaws and most become very apparent when politicians start to cater to influencers with agendas. Government has become too powerful, with citizens left to wonder what they can do to take back their true rights at this point.... and that will probably never change. I focus on family, friends and neighbors...that I can control

Thanks to American Politics bleeding through TV, Movies and the social medias. The Federal Government here has played on the idea of a Left and Right wing. The last thing they want is for the public to realise their getting spit roasted by both the Liberal Party and the Labour Party whilst the Australian National Party holds the camera.

As for the State Government. The State Premiere has really missed his chance of being a Big Brother contestant. He spends his days travelling to get his mug in front of every video camera he can. (Should stay in his office and get some work done) Meanwhile his okayed $20 million dollars to fix hospital ramping and $140 million dollars to upgrade a swimming centre that only rich people used.. 😞

I sympathise with logical thinkers in the U.S i really do.

Here in the UK we have
The bland leading the blind
- currently in office.

The Nazsty party
- currently the official opposition (top brass of which are all trying to illustrate just how 'tough' they'd be....if selected and elected)

The Liberal Democrats who are desperately trying to play so many different pressure groups into voting for them no member of the public has ANY idea what they supposedly stand for...or why.

And then there's the
Super spiv looking guy !!
- well known hatemonger of a cabbage known by one and all as Mr. Nigel Farage.
Who some think is shortly to take over the Conservative Party !
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Picklebobble2 The Zionists will continue to attack Jews around the world to make them fearful of living in those countries so that those Jews will move to the Levant and rebuild what the Zionists have destroyed there. Expect a lot more horrific attacks until the Zionists accomplish their stated objective. After all, their messiah will appear within the next 215 years so they have to have their "promised land" ready for his arrival.

I love in the US. So from my perspective we have a party that supports the monied interests above most other things, especially the interests of minorities…and a party that puts the monied interests above everything and also hates minorities

I don’t have a favorite

Just one party that’s slightly less awful
BohoBabe · M
On an establishment level, Leftists want to improve things, Liberals want to keep things the same with some minor changes, and Conservatives want to make things much worse.
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
@BohoBabe nawwwwww

@WoWgirll yaaaaaaasss
Where I am, we're supposed to be having general elections in the coming year. I've come to the conclusion that none of our politicians really do much to improve our situation. I have decided not to vote. They're all hopeless.

I keep it very simple.
Under the Democrats people are employed.
With Bush 43 and whatshisname 45 & 47
they kill the economy with the belief that they are experts! 😅

Make things crappier then ask for money to be reelected.
BorealPedant · 41-45, M
@Crazywaterspring Bingo. I'm convinced the Democrats are just a fundraising grift disguised as a political party.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@BorealPedant It appears that way in this red state. They come to town, make nice speeches, collect donations and disappear.
