RisingMorningStar7 Probably going to be accused of a bunch of things because I did the last time this came up but whatever. Based on my read of your post you do raise some valid points. Consent laws should be based on actual ability to give meaningful consent. Not an arbitrary number. Age of consent is arbitrary and vastly different in many countries. Here in Canada and I am only in my early 40s age of consent went from 13 to 16 (17 if the older person is in a position of power). And it has had zero meaningful impact on anything.
None of these numbers are based on actual mental development and ability to understand situations based on brain development. If it was age of consent would be closer to the drinking age in the US in people's 20s.
And nobody can convince me that a 16 year old will magically be able to sus out a manipulator in 12 months.
Age of consent also does nothing to protect people with developmental disabilities who have the mental capacity of a child.
The whole thing is a mess.
Oh and fun fact. A former Canadian Minister of Public safety was in violation of the age of consent law they raised and nothing happened. The whole thing was a mess. and proves it doesn't actually mean anything meaningful will be done.
