What are your thoughts on the restructuring of the Department of Education?

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please read this. Please be kind to each other in the comments, this is a safe space for the sharing of thoughts.

https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-afpi-tpusa-hillsdale-college-and-over-40-national-and-state-organizations-launch-america-250-civics-coalition#:~:text=Home-,U.S

Personally, I find this quite terrifying. I don’t enjoy the idea of children being presented skewed/biased information. The plan is to essentially water down/erase facts about U.S. History, and teaching kids about being “patriotic”. It seems more like indoctrination than anything. From what I have gathered from this, they plan on forcing religion and private organizations into the public school systems on a national level. Government endorsed religion is unconstitutional. It breaks our first amendment rights. The fact that this is all happening and nobody has tried to protest/fight this is insane.

Speaking as an older person, I can tell you that "history" in textbooks has been being erased, watered down, and altered since I was in the 4th grade, and probably even before that. You would not even believe some of the stuff that was removed.

I read the article, and it appears that Hillsdale college is presenting this initiative, and that the various organizations listed, along with Hillsdale, are planning to teach American Civics.

When I was a kid, we pledged allegiance to the flag every single morning. We were taught that the flag is a revered symbol of our nation. It didn't hurt any of us. We didn't feel "indoctrinated" by that.
Perhaps YOU might.

When I was a girl scout, we were taught that the flag must never touch the ground, because the flag was sacred, as is our nation...and as the daughter of a full Bird Colonel in the US Army, I grew up listening to Taps when we went to pick my father up at work, and I watched the REAL respect that the soldiers lowering the flag FELT as they saluted.

I do believe that prayer in schools HAS to private. It should be a moment of silence. And then if students WANT to pray, in the manner of their own family's religion, then they may. However, I do not believe that teachers, like coaches and others, who pray out loud on the field, should be persecuted for their beliefs.

Reading your post, above, and having read the article you listed, I do detect a bit of exaggerated hysteria.
A bit? @4meAndyou

Hmm... I don’t see anything about math, reading, science listed among your concerns! Odd..

You do seem concerned about history. Historically public education has focused heavily on indoctrination. Current state indoctrination appears to focus on why white people are bad, why math proficiency is racist, and why boys and girls should be girls and boys. There also appears to be a cult like narrative that anyone with enough sense to reject these philosophies is degenerate, not fully human, and deserving of death!

In any event, eliminating the DOE will save money simply by eliminating the middle man and result in a better educational environment by returning control to the local level where it can be more effective and efficient.

I only mentioned Civics & History because that was the topic of the press release.

As someone who just recently left the public education system, my peers nor I have felt that history was teaching us that “white people are bad”. There is no country on this planet that does not have skeletons in their closets. History for many is brutal, shameful and ugly. Future generations need to know that as well.

As for your other topics mentioned, although I have strongly opposing opinions on those, they aren’t relevant to this current conversation.

I don’t believe the Department of Education should be eliminated. It should have been restructured towards STEM/STEAM education. We should be pouring into our youth instead of stripping them down.

I think it has been needed for some time now. Our school board always says they have to go by the " California Standard" when curriculum is questioned by parents!
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@fanuc2013 so, it's better for them to go by the "Washington DC" standard, which is just forced on them by a government from even further away?
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@fanuc2013 aren't you lot the "facts don't care about your feelings" crowd?
History should be taught accurately with no historical facts hidden because it might be uncomfortable. Otherwise it is indoctrination.

I will teach my son the truth about Americans. We learned a lot in our travels. They can't erase everything.
yestestvennaya · 22-25, F
@ScreamingFox What will you teach him?

@yestestvennaya how to yodel
I agree with you 100%.

Eliminating dei and critical race theory needs to happen . Eliminating them doesn't erase any history . I'm sure teaching white shame is the way the left wants it to go .
Children have been being presented liberally skewed /biased information in the current system for a couple decades, while educational achievement levels plummeted.

Were you terrified by that ?

In a way, it kinda makes me glad that I graduated from school before it was restructured.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
Actually it simply goes back to the fundamental roots of our nation, not against it.

@yestestvennaya Even if a person doesn’t know something I think that was the point behind Kirk’s mantra, was to correct them and imbue them with knowledge they didn’t have before so they could at least have the opportunity to think upon it afterwards, in the hopes of realizing that a lot of unintelligent people had been either lying to them out of ignorance, or maliciousness.

Что это? The Wednesday award for the dumbest c..t?

Do you know what the First Amendment also says? That the citizen can exercise their religion when and where they wish to. What do you think the implication of this is? If a high school coach wishes to pray with students, he can. If Louisiana schools wish to display Ten Commandments, they can. It is not a matter of law or principle you contest; it is your disfavor of God. What other rationale could there be? You don't like God. You don't want God.

First of all, the name calling is uncalled for. As I stated in the beginning, this is a place to share thoughts civilly.

GOVERNMENT ENFORCED religion is against the first amendment. Like you said, freedom of religion is protected, but there’s a stark difference between practice of faith and forcing Christianity into PUBLIC school curriculums.

Not everyone prays to the same God. There is a separation of church and state for that very reason. If people want their faith instilled in an educational setting, then they should send their children to private schools that embody those ideologies.

@yestestvennaya

The Founding Fathers specifically seperated church and state, because Europe was torn due to wars between Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians.

The Constitution specifically ensured that no religion would be enforced by the state, all Americans are free to worship whatever they want or nothing at all.

Needs to be eliminated, not restructured

Seems to be less a restructuring as an plan to indoctrinate students with far right, white supremacist, pseudo-Christian ideals.
