The Murder of Iryna Zarutska on the Lynx Blue Line

Iryna Zarutska, 23, was an immigrant from Ukraine. She came to America to escape the war in her native land. As she sat down on the Lynx Blue Line in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 22, the man sitting directly behind her pulled out a knife and murdered her in plain view of the public and the surveillance camera. No one lifted a finger to help her. The Charlotte Light Rail released the video, which immediately went viral. The suspect was identified as Decarlos Brown, Jr., 34.

Just four minutes later, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. allegedly whips out a folding knife and lunges forward, stabbing her three times, at least once in the neck, police said.

The chilling video then appears to show Brown then walking through the rail car, stripping off his sweatshirt and waiting by the doors — as passengers began to notice blood dripping from him.

Zarutska, who grabbed her neck as blood spilled onto the train floor, collapsed in her seat and was pronounced dead on the light rail, investigators said.

Police said Brown got off at the next stop, where a folding knife was later recovered near the platform. He was treated at a hospital for a cut on his hand before being taken into custody on a murder charge.

It took six minutes for police to respond. Transit security guards were on the train, but in the car ahead of Zarutska’s when she was attacked.

Court records show that Brown has a rap sheet as long as your arm. Fourteen arrests for everything from threats to robbery with a deadly weapon (for which he served time in prison) to theft. The latest arrest before the murder allowed him to walk free. Iryna Zarutska paid for that fiasco with her life. He has now been charged with First Degree Murder and hopefully isn’t going anywhere.

In a statement on the Charlotte light rail incident, Democrat Mayor Vi Lyles insists the city cannot “arrest our way out of issues” like this, failing to mention the victim, Iryna Zarutska, even once and showing more concern for the perpetrator’s homeless status.

Sport, I'm surprised you didn't ask if the victim was in the US legally or should be deported.

The attack came just weeks after she fled her country for refuge in the US amid Ukraine’s war with Russia.

From Hindustan Times report:

Decarlos Brown Jr. is a homeless man who was arrested for the murder of Zarutska. “Brown was transported to Atrium Health with non-life-threatening injuries sustained at the time of the incident. Brown will be arrested upon his release. He is charged with First Degree Murder,” authorities had shared in an earlier statement.

The 34-year-old reportedly has a long and disturbing criminal history which includes assaulting his own sister months after being released from prison, New York Post reported. The publication stated Brown has spent most of his adult life in and out of jail. His rap sheet reportedly goes back to 2011 and includes charges like felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and communicating threats, NY Post said, citing court records they accessed.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail reported that Brown served five years behind bars for armed robbery and was arrested for assaulting his sister, months after he was released in September 2020. Brown's most recent run-in with the law came in January, when he was charged with misusing the 911 system.

Cops were conducting a welfare check on Brown, who told them that a person gave him a ‘man-made' material, which controlled when he did things like eat or talk, as per The Charlotte Observer. “Brown wanted officers to investigate this ‘man-made’ material that was inside of his body. Officers advised Brown that the issue was medical issue and that there was nothing further they could do,” the publication said, citing an affidavit. This made him upset with the cops and he dialed 911, getting arrested after he hung up on them.

it's obvious that this man has mental issues and should have been in custody somewhere.

He had already spent time behind bars for his prior crimes.

This is a sad example of a failed system.

And naturally, the callous mayor, who didn't even mention the victim's name, is a Democrat.

"Can't arrest our way out of issues" like this? 🙄

Whatever happened to three strikes and you're out?

With a rap sheet as long as Brown's, three felony convictions should have put him away for life long ago, and Iryna Zarutska would still be alive.

The Mayor needs to be locked in a room with DeCarlos Brown. I think we should give DeCarlos his knife back...just to make things interesting.

@4meAndyou

You would never get the Mayor out of his gated community, and if by chance you did, he would never be without his armed guard detail.
