I've had that happen many times in spite of not pushing the controlled economy/no private property angle notions.

My politics vary depending on what's happening in the world at the time.
Although I am definitely left of centre.

They perform as expected. They tell me what they believe my views are, and then teardown their strawman.

Pretty standard. Happens a lot. You don't even need to respond as they assume both sides of the conversation and I just laugh.
