Looking A Gift Horse In the Mouth

I don't want to be ungrateful, but let's examine the trade deal between the US and Japan, and why I don't like it.

For starters, the actual deal is 1% to 2% of what Trump announced, and the the rest is in the form of future bank loans, IF these loans make sense.

But it's better than nothing, right? That's just it, it wasn't like there was nothing. Japan had already invested close to $800B in the US, and most of it hinges on technology moving toward renewables, EVs, batteries, generation technology, etc.

ALL areas where it did not take any arm twisting on our end, because it made sense.

The Japanese economy must complete against China's technology, and the latter is all in on renewable/EV/Batteries.

And that's why money kept flowing from Japan to the US.

And why nearly and actual $800B flowed from Japan to the US during the previous administration.

But the Trump deal is conditioned on moving the clock back, and "drill baby drill", which means that remaining 98%-99% of the deal is not likely to happen, because no Japanese banking authority is going to bet on the horse that's puking its guts out.

I could also bring up the issue of the other gift horse, AKA the "free" luxury 747, but I don't want to totally scramble MAGAs brains.

So, MAGA, enjoy your fake videos of Trump chasing Obama's Bronco, because that's all you've got.

Something I noticed about this deal, the British deal and the EU deal just announced is that so much of what is coming from the other party is in the form of future loans or investment "promises".. Lets pause for a moment and consider how vasluable a Trump "promise" is. If I were a betting man, I might promise a lot for a time when it was anticipated Trump wouldnt be there, just toi keep trade moving.. Or alternatively promise what he was already going to get. Like military hardware purchases..One of Americas few profitable exports.😷.

@whowasthatmaskedman that's good enough for MAGA who treat is cash in the bank. They are, of course, been waiting for two weeks for the Trump healthcare plan, since 2019.

@Northwest A perfect example. But forget about what he promised last week. Whats he promising tomorrow.?😷

But they can’t do maths well so this all adds up in their book.. it’s like the guy bragging how instead of buying bitcoin when it was a dollar he bought it when it was 30K except their serious and think thats actually a great deal.

Japan avoids the worst of the tariffs . . Trump avoids getting egg on his face and has something tangible to show his adoring fans back home.

It's a "deal" of sorts, but there are easier ways to go about doing trade than threatening to blow up international markets.

It's not even a deal.... It's a framework for a deal with nothing in concrete yet
