American Eagle ran an ad based on eugenics just now

Literally Nazi eugenics is wild, talks about Sydney Sweeny having great "jeans" (genes) because she has blue eyes and is white 🙄

"Sydney Sweeny's got great jeans (genes)"

A pun made in an ad campaign. 10 ppl on X want you to believe this add is racist/eugenics : AE ad = Bad Pun = Nazi(?) lol ok

Before this ad campaign Sydney Sweeney was a top actor in America. Now, Sydney Sweeney made big $$$ starring in a (now controversial) ad campaign for AE and is still a top actor in America.

Am I a bad person for not being outraged by this? 🤷‍♂

Full disclosure: I used to think Sydney Sweeney was very attractive. I stil do, but I used to too.

Proof:

It's more than that. I mean, obviously, it's a double entendre, referring to her having good genes, and that in and of itself isn't necessarily Nazi-ish. But they show her hair as blonde and her eyes blue in that ad, which is subtly referencing the Aryan ideal.
Am I a bad person for not being outraged by this?🤷‍♀
No. It means you miss the subtle, yet creepy implications. Not surprising, given that they walk right up to the line between acceptable admiration of the human body and white supremacy. It's what we call a dog whistle.

Oh, and just by the way, they're being that subtle for the same reason the kids at my school used to quietly say and do things that they knew would piss me off. It's a classic tactic. Do your bullying quietly, so that when your victim starts screaming, you can call them crazy.

@LordShadowfire good points.

I didn't miss it. It's there, just like a visible minority isn't there. They could have found a very attractive visible minority but they didn't. I made a choice and I don't think I'm a bad person for choosing to not be outraged.

AE made a choice, it wasn't that sutble, and now their ad campaign is notorious. Good return on ad dollars, bad fallout for brand image. Really bad corporate messaging that furthers a negative message towards diversity and inclusiveness at a time when equality and human rights are being attacked across the board. But again, I'm glib because it's an ad for clothing and not a policy platform or proposed legislation. I do acknowledge how hurtful it is to people on the receiving end of intolerant hatred (I don't pretend to know how that feels.)

they're being that subtle for the same reason the kids at my school used to quietly say and do things that they knew would piss me off.

I get it. And that's very bad. I have hope for change in humanity, but not any time soon...

@swirlie right? i'm not scanning the universe for signs of nazi/fascist influencing. but to single out THIS ad(?). I mean... come on!!! lol

you should be outraged that the majority of your fellow Americans voted Trump into the Presidency TWICE!

That is another post for another day, i'm too sober to unpack that lol

Okay, but here's the problem. You see it as just an ad for clothing, but it's another piece of a multimedia campaign to normalize white supremacy. It's only one small piece, and taken by itself, it can easily be dismissed as insignificant. But it's still a piece of a campaign.

@LordShadowfire yep, that's a problem.

@tenente What do you mean? I'm not mad that she makes big money. But they could have framed the commercial differently, we do have a rise in nazism, it's a bad time to play like that
