Let's Be Honest. There Are Some Differences BetweenTactics of ICE and the Nazi Gestapo: Rounding People Up Without Warrants, Without Due Process...

throwing those arrested in cells for weeks, not allowing contact with family or friends...

The Gestapo didn't wear masks.

(And this is by no means to minimize the crimes against humanity that Nazi Germany committed. But this is how the Nazi regime started. It's how Mussolini's Squadristi started. It's how Putin consolidated power. It's how even Sulla started, with his proscription lists over 2100 years ago.)

Gardeners reportedly taken by ICE agents while mowing outside California home

Neighbors are concerned after a Southern California man said his two gardeners were reportedly taken by federal immigration agents as they were working outside his home.

On Thursday morning, Christopher Ames said his gardeners were mowing the lawn outside his house in Ontario, Calif. His neighbors, who had witnessed the men being taken into custody, quickly alerted him to the incident.

“They left the lawnmower running right here on the front lawn,” Ames said. “They threw my gardeners’ phones in their [work truck], along with the car keys, left everything open and just took off.”

Neighbors who learned of the arrests said they were a bit stunned.

“I just think that’s wrong,” Ames told Nexstar’s KTLA. “This is not the way we treat people, and this is not the way this country should be acting.”

Luis said the two men were reportedly taken by agents with ICE, and they have not been able to contact them.

“They were my family, and we’re living in fear,” he said.

A neighbor named Rose said she watched the arrests from her home across the street.

“I understand people are just doing their jobs and people are here illegally,” she said. “I get the entire picture. But to be scooped up in such a way, I just hope that they had the opportunity to reach out to their families.”

With the men’s cellphones left behind, Rose said she is concerned they would have no way to contact loved ones to let them know of their detainment, leaving them in distress.

“As a mom and a wife, if I’m expecting someone to come home and they don’t come home and I have no way of reaching them or finding them, that’s the scary part,” she said.

In a way it's good that they feel they have to wear masks. It means the MAGA admin still has some fear of the public.

Democracy was really new in Germany, Italy, and Japan when the Fascists took over. Fascism was more extreme than previous authoritarian governments, but it wasn't unheard of for someone to get arrested because they protested the government. So of course the Gestapo didn't feel like they had to wear masks, there were no repercussions. But in modern America, I think it's going to be a lot harder to go full fascist. I just can't see most Americans being ok with this.
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays Yeah, that's part of my point. The Gestapo didn't have that fear because Authoritarianism was already the norm in Germany. The Nazis were much more extreme, all Fascists were, but people being arrested without a trial was just part of life in Europe. Whereas in America, there's an anger and a backlash that previous fascist countries didn't have.

Germany did have a constitutional monarchy that began in 1871 and lasted until the Weimar Republic (1918), which in turn lasted until the Nazis took control (1933).'

Italy also had a constitutional monarchy, established in 1861 and lasting until Mussolini took control in 1922.

Japan prospered during its brief period of democracy after World War I before the militarists took over power.

That wasn't unheard of in the United States in the 1960s, along with being soaked with fire hoses and bit by police dogs. In 1970, you could even get shot and killed for doing so.

Plus Germany lost their democracy even before the Nazis took over. There was a period where the Weimar Republic had checks and balances within the government, but people weren't allowed to vote for their representatives anymore. And because democracy was so new, the public just kinda shrugged off the loss of democracy. It was just something they tried for a few years, after all. But if Americans don't have midterm elections, that's actually gonna be a big deal.

True, but the reaction was pretty similar to what we're seeing now. Normies weren't sold on desegregation yet, but they didn't like how police were treating the protesters. That's why even back then, the Right used the "outside agitators" lie.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I just don't think Americans have the appetite for Fascism. But Americans are also very lazy, so maybe they'll be mad about it, but won't actually fight back. We'll see after the midterms.

@sunsporter1649 illegal alien criminals

Do you see that as a description of one group, or three groups?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
When agents randomly target individuals like this, it suggests that members of the public are turning over their neighbours. Another mark of an authoritarian state.
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
I only have one question, were they rounding up illegals due to crossing into other countries, or was their motives racial?
@Quimliqer Racial. Nobody who has been paying attention still thinks this isn't about racism.
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@BohemianBabe I have a feeling they have a job to clean up someone else’s mess!!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Yeah, they should mail the illegal aliens a letter giving the time and date of their arrest, right?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649 These people are not illegal. Like anyone else, they are innocent until proven guilty.

Take care. The goons may be coming for you next 😳
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl Yup, ignoring Federal law is not a crime. Got it....
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649 Trump does that every other day. Why is he not locked up in El Salvador?
Obama was deporter in chief. Alternatives aren't the Dems. Dems ain't no different from Trump.
You don't need no alternatives!
@BohemianBabe Dems keep alternatives off the ballot and limit what choices people can know about. Certainly that's good enough for Americans. Democracy without actually having choice. You win! That's why we can't stand the West.
@Roundandroundwego Yes, that's why we need to push the Democrats to have rank-choice voting. And that's working, more and more states are allowing rank-choice voting, which is the only way third parties have a chance. By that only works if we have democratic elections in the first place, which Republicans want to eliminate.

We agree, we want more democracy, we want more opportunity for outside politicians. But that doesn't happen under Fascism.

Obama was deporter in chief.

Why are you telling me that? I didn't vote for him.

In fact, I have voted against him FIVE TIMES in my lifetime.

@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays The person who came up with Godwin's Law actually expressed some regret over coining the term.

Godwin's Law was supposed to be used to mock people who compare ANYTHING they dislike to Nazis. Hitler and Himmler had mustaches, so mustaches are fascist!
Godwin's Law is not when someone is being a Nazi, and you say they're being a Nazi. But now actual Nazis just deflect criticism by shouting, Godwin's Law!
