House Republicans Push to Drop SNAP Dependent ‘Exemption’ Age From 18 To 7

Republicans received pushback during last week's Agriculture Committee meeting.

House Republicans are pushing to make a significant change to the legal cut-offs surrounding the claiming of dependent and work requirement exemptions under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. As it stands, a child must be under the age of 18. However, in the agriculture section of the Republican reconciliation bill, it has been proposed that the age be drastically lowered.

In a May 21 Agriculture Committee meeting, House Republicans proposed changing the SNAP age of dependency to 7, excluding those older from receiving assistance.

The proposed change caused an outpouring of pushback from Democrats who disagreed with the institution of harsher restrictions on state cost-sharing policies.

Rep. Angie Craig, a ranking member, said during the hearing, “This is one of the most egregious parts of this entire package. I honestly can’t understand how my Republican colleagues can think it’s a good idea to take food away and put more pressure on families who have 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds. I mean, it’s almost like nobody’s got a 7-, 8-, 9-, 10-year-old.”

That seems messed up especially since I don't think they would allow an 8 year old to work yet ...

The bare minimum age needs to be AT least as high the bare minimum working age for a child. Probably should be higher than that, I'm just saying bare minimum.

Don't give them ideas!
@basilfawlty89 I'm just saying the minimum needs to be at least as high as the minimum working age.

@sstronaut Florida now allows children as young as 14 to work overnight shifts and allows teens to work overnight jobs during the school week. It's not that far of a stretch to think Death DeSantis would lower to 8 years old under the banner of keeping Florida as a place "where woke comes to die."
@MarkPaul That seemed messed up.

@sstronaut oh I know, I'm just saying I wouldn't put child labour past them.

Who knew Oliver Twist was coming to America!

@sstronaut That's their mission, so... mission accomplished.

@MarkPaul The banner of Florida's child labor laws reads Strict Enforcement
Children under 17 aren't allowed to work before 6:30 a.m. or after 11:00 p.m. on school nights

@basilfawlty89 The answer to your question re Oliver twist, was anyone who read project 2025 and its subtext, which was virtually no one on the right apart from the authors. The aim is to create a semi peasant generation in a couple of decades, unable to organise or fight oppression, because they are reliant on their betters for handouts just to feed their kids..The churches will keep them quiet and be the repository of charity and hope as long as the people dont make waves..And it will all be done in baby steps like this. Trump is only here so people will accept anything to be rid of him when the time comes..
This civil war wont be foght with guns. it is being fought with food, education and health care. Speak out of turn and you wont get them..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman oh I know all about Project 2025. @LordShadowfire actually linked me the document. I didn't have time to read all of it, but what I read I horrified me.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@basilfawlty89 I'm glad someone read it. If anybody's interested, someone shared a website with me where they are keeping track of which aspects of that awful project they've already implemented.

@LordShadowfire I'm on it. Will watch it with interest. thanks. You just look at the list and see the words dictatorship written all over it don't you.

@sstronaut Mixed up is not the word for it. Abusive and classist would be closer. So raped ot abused women can get abortions and their kids cant get clothed and fed so presumably die. I would say this is something similar to what Hitler had in mind but at the end of the day he didnt apply his ideas across the whole population. If Trump is trying to achieve a decrease in population or an decrease in skilled workers he should recoginise he is making America "grunt" again. Its no recipe for success.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Captain But it is a success if you want to develop an underclass you can control.. Now this is conspiracy theory stuff. But follow the logic. America having high unemployment makes it more likely to get higher recruitment for the military, as poor, unemployed and undereducated young people look for a way to get an education and break out of the poverty cycle. And which side wants a strong military?😷
Captain · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Russia - with its new ally perhaps (LOL)
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Captain I suppose that would be the height of irony. Wouldnt it? The problem is that once you get past the painted on layer of freedom and flag waving patriotism, the similarities between modern Russia under Putin and modern America under trump (for the time being) are there. The corrupting influence of money, the coopting of government power to serve profit and the suppression by one means or another of the average person. Of course, Putin has the oligarchs in line, where trump is a puppet of the real power..😷
Captain · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I totally agree sir. Even in the UK we have no real democracy. You have to look to countries with PR like Scotland and Germany to see that. As soon as you allow big business and even unions to sponsor political parties democracy is dead, and similarly first past the post systems lead to defensive tactical voting which is again anti-democratic. Only PR gives us true democracy and only where financial sponsorhip is not allowed. A dream in reality as it stands but wait until the world is run by a single directive alligned AI and the world will find peace. Viva the Phildelphia experiment prediction. Of course we wojuld nt be here to see it. "Eyes of your eyes".
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Captain In my case, I am less fussed about democracy and looking harder at the best use of available resources. Certainly neither America or britain are good at that. But in my view Britain is at least paying lip service. America is run by pirates, for villains..😷

@Captain No. A dog must have fleas to remind him that he is a dog. But a dog needs to understand who his master is..😷

@Captain It does..However, for me the sheep or cow analogie works better. A sheep can be fleeced and milked before it is eaten..And the social safety net, as overstetched as it is, still works better in Britain than America. (Even though I much prefer my own)😷
