The one thing I credit Trump for is that he's forcing everyone to re-evaluate the principles of Western democracy. What do we stand for in this world in 2025, and how can we ensure democracy is fit for purpose in the age of social media and the development of digital currency and AI? He's making Americans (and everyone else) take a closer look at their institutions, their justice system, even the Constitution itself. His administration is proving to be a vigorous workout for all the checks and balances we thought would protect us. Maybe we fell asleep at the wheel and became too comfortable in our reliance on the institutional structures we've erected? Trump is like those people who check your company's security systems to try and identify breaches that you can then fix. Of course he doesn't actively mean to do that, but that's been the inadvertent effect of his election as POTUS and his assault on the status quo. I know things can spiral out of control and people might get injured or even die. But maybe we needed this to happen? Only time will tell.

Honestly it's because of Trump that I no longer really support capitalism, I just haven't said anything because I still don't know what I am politically. I know my politics lean left but I'm not in a hurry to define anything. All I know is that our society is considerably weak and it's even weaker with Trump.
I mean for Christ sake, DOGE employees broke in to a privately owned business and just helped themselves. They had to have the cops called on them as they refused to leave.
And still, no arrests regarding Elon is made and Trump isn't being held accountable for anything. So it's quite obvious that our system is so weak that just anyone can take over. What if it wasn't Trump but someone even worse? What would we do?
Capitalism is weak, democracy seems weak.. no checks and balances and I'm not sure I believe any of it anymore.

@SatanBurger yes, it's certainly terrifying, like a horse loose in a hospital as one stand-up comedian put it recently. If we survive this dismantling of public institutions and the trashing of the status quo, hopefully we'd have learned something and be better for it. Trump's like the Dark Web, reminding everyone that the regular internet lacks adequate checks and balances that might ultimately destroy us. He's the worst aspects of rampant western freedoms made manifest. He's America's dirty linen hanging out on the washing line for the whole world to see.

@SatanBurger I think we must realize that concepts like democracy are a construct and only exist if people believe in them.

let's suppose trump backs off with the tariffs, the damage is already done in some respect. i think it will take a long time for canadians to buy american products again. and even going south for holidays will hurt them. it's a sad, sad situation all around
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@beermeplease From the outside looking in, I am increasingly thinking that Mark Carney will win your election.
beermeplease · M
@Burnley123 i think so too...but i know some of my friends on here from ontario are going to vote conservative...basically ontario decides the election

@Adeptlinguist Precisely! Trump personifiies everything that is bad with American, every negative American stereotype. I don't think Canada will trust the US for generations.
redredred · M
It doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks. The American electorate resoundingly elected him and still likes how he’s doing the job.
In 2016 I wouldn't have said this but can you see how similar Kim Jong un and Trump are these days.

Biden was not respected. Is Trump respected? It is hard to say. I have lost interest in Trump. He acquiesced to Europe when he was trying to stop war in Ukraine. He was weak. Why should Putin accept ceasefire when US continues to arm Ukraine? Trump is allowing Israel to pummel Gaza with
bombs again. He is messing with the Houthis and antagonizing Iran. Donald Trump appears more pro-war than he was in his first term. This man has so far succumbed to the pressure of Europe, liberal US journalists, Republican hawks, and the mad Zionists. Zionists are hungrier for war than Europeans. There was a lull, and now they inexplicably go at it again, while encouraging Trump to antagonize Iran.
It is hopeless, what a shame. America may have more cards than Ukraine, but it does not have all the cards in the world. It cannot go around this planet bullying everything in sight, not anymore.

He is frequently laughed at by world leaders
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@bookerdana Yep. After he said in a UN speech that he is the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@JimboSaturn I am sure every American president is laughed at or despised. What is different about Trump?
If he made his mind up about what kind of leader he wants to be, he would make it easier for himself. He is no isolationist when he is sending arms to Ukraine, antagonizing Iran, and allowing Zionists to bomb helpless Palestinians. You should love his foreign policy.

The United States is the only democracy in the world. Canada and UK and even Australia are all dictatorships.
He and Vance made it clear any country that messes with our democracy is going down.
We will not fight in the wars they create.
France says they are sending troops to fight Russia. When France gets Nuked the USA will do nothing. Its not our war.

No. The Trump regime is neither respected or liked. The general response is dislike, hate, or ridicule.
There is a reason why I call him the Yankee Boris Yeltsin. Although at least Boris had the excuse of being drunk.

@newjaninev2 Sure you do. This conspiracy theory that Trump is a Russian asset.
Takes some next level mental gymnastics to convince yourself that peace is treason and diplomacy is appeasement.

It does not matter if Trump is respected. The rest of the world is not what you think it is. It is dog eat dog. He is leader of US, a major power with decades of bullying behind it. Is this not enough?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@emiliya
That's why we observe the international rule of law - except those countries ruled by dogs.

Not the whole world, just the West, minus the leftists among you. Obviously. You're winning proudly together with the conservatives, moderates and conservatives together making war the only future! Gahead.
