Should Trump be taken literally ?

Or should we just go on pretending that he hasn't said what he just said ?
Top | New | Old
Yes, we should take him literally because he's the president of the United States. We shouldn't have to play a game of charades to work out his real intentions. He should be true to his word and mean what he says. I believe that he does mean what he says, he just doesn't always have the freedom or ability to enact what he says. He is every bit as short sighted and limited as he appears to be. It's not an illusion. There isn't some sub plot where he's actually a genius and an astute businessman. He's the human equivalent of a business for dummies book, that's the level at which he operates. He believes that business is all about firm handshakes and dick measuring. There is no nuance, no strategy of any merit, he's just a thin skinned sledgehammer. Putting Trump at the negotiating table with Putin is like putting Justin Bieber at the chess board opposite Magnus Carlsen.

@UBotMate Indeed. It's not really a negotiation because there is no quid pro quo. It's more of a discussion how much Russia will get and when.
Nanoose · 61-69, M
We should take him literally.
Trump just said he invited Trudeau - Canada’s Governor to watch the hockey game with him.
Trudeau is Canada's Prime Minister and Canada doesn't even have governors. Trump likely knows that but he said it anyway to literally inply that Canada is already the 51st state of America.
Cheers!
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Nanoose He is calling our Prime Minister a governor on purpose as an insult. He has been doing that for 2 months now.

Our provincial leaders (Premiers) went to Washington to talk with senior American officials to try to avert tariffs and the Canadian officials were told point blank to take American annexation of Canada seriously.
swirlie · F
@Nanoose
Nah, that's BS.
Yes we should, with the caveat that much of what he says is lies, even though he may believe them. For example:

June 2015: “There’s nobody bigger or better at the military than I am.”
July 2016: "So a general gets on, sent obviously by Obama, and he said, 'Mr. Trump doesn't understand. He knows nothing about defense.' I know more about offense and defense than they will ever understand, believe me. Believe me. Than they will ever understand. Than they will ever understand."
Nov 2015: "I know more about ISIS than the generals do."
Nov 2015: "I know more about courts than any human being on Earth."
Mar 2016: "Nobody knows more about trade than me."
Apr 2016: "I know more about renewables than any human being on Earth."
May 2016: "I think nobody knows more about taxes than I do, maybe in the history of the world. Nobody knows more about taxes."
July 2016: "[L]ook, as a builder, nobody in the history of this country has ever known so much about infrastructure as Donald Trump."
Feb 8 2017: "I understand things. I comprehend very well. Ok? Better than, I think, almost anybody"
Dec 2018: "Technology — nobody knows more about technology than me."
Jan 2019: "I know more about drones than anybody. I know about every form of safety that you can have."

Want video evidence Trump said these things?

@ElwoodBlues Are you suggesting that trump is boastful and full of hot air?
@Punches You took the words right out of my mouth!
Punches · 46-50, F
@ElwoodBlues He is a know-it-all.
Of course his followers be like "hu hu hardy har he he, he ist so entelijunt!"
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Trump is the freely elected and duly appointed leader of the American people. Thats the new standard to apply to all..😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ffony I hear you and am in a similar boat. But I long ago stopped worrying about the world (or specific parts) Thats what they used to pay me for. But I now worry only about those close around me. And the problems I can actually influence myself. There is quite enough there to keep me busy'
😷
ffony · M
@whowasthatmaskedman That's great, but do you watch the nightly news?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ffony Almost every night..Bear in mind we have a couple of reliable fact based new services for overseas and local news. Mostly leaving the opinions to you to work out.. I do pity the Americans there. My background is economics. So I always look for the numbers, not the opinions.😷
Punches · 46-50, F
What did he say this time? Something brilliant I assume. 🙄

But taken literally - he comes up with yet another well thought-out idea each week, meanwhile forgetting about the one last week. Several weeks ago it was about deportations, Two weeks ago he wanted to annex Canada, last week he wanted to buy Gaza, and this week he is blaming Ukraine for the war.
Did I miss anything?

How could anyone take him too serious or literal?
What did he say now?
TBF, Trump's brain is soup, he doesn't know what he saying. However, we should look at the actions of his admin, which right now is doing everything it can to harm the working-class and America's allies.
swirlie · F
@BohemianBabe
Trump has already destroyed the working relationship the USA has always had with it's allies, so that part is gone. It's up to Americans now to take back their country and save their own lives from Trump and his MAGA cult.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@BohemianBabe And to screw over the electoral process for next time.. Even they dont trust Americans with a vote...😷

Literally?

Imo, not if by that you mean to place any expectation that he might not contradict it a minute later when it suits him better.

He has far too much contempt for everything and everyone but himself to be taken literally in that sense.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@MistyCee Yes, he knows that the gullible will merely shrug and say 'Oh, that's just what trump does... never mind'

donald '24 hours' trump has nothing but contempt for his sycophantic poodles.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
He has done what he said he would do
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Patriot96 So... nothing, huh?
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@newjaninev2 he accomplished more in one day than pedo pete did in 4 years
BigGuy2 · 31-35, M
@Patriot96 ... you do know don't you, you'll NEVER get a reply to your comment
calicuz · 56-60, M
Yes, take everything he says literally. It's a psychological tactic. Those who control him hope that if he says enough crazy things eventually everyone will stop listening to him and stop paying any attention, and then that's when the real danger begins.
TrashCat · M
Yes.

Vice President Trump should be taken 100% at face value
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
His senior advisors told the Canadian government that Canada should take his threats to make Canada the 51st state seriously.
Doesnt pass th realiyy test, so no
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
It's a lie to belittle Zelensky to make the awful deal they are about to do palatable to trump's base.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 Also to make it palatable to Russian domestic media. who will broadcast ir widely to his public as a support for his policies at home..How long has it been an open secret that Trump (and now the American people) are in Putins pocket diddling him..? And America says its OK...😷

@Punches
Well, I actually did get kicked out more often! In fact, it was every other day that I'd end up standing in the hallway outside the door of my advanced English Literature class.

Who actually turned me in to the Principal in my first year of high school and then again in my last year of high school, was the same Teacher... my English Lit Teacher, who was a British man who was about 12 inches shorter than I was and looked like Britain's version of Adolf Hitler, though he was imported from Liverpool England.
Punches · 46-50, F
@swirlie Did you want to say, "Good day down there, CHAP! I am here for Ze english class" in a h*tler voice? 😄

My sophomore English Lit teacher was some taller lady, and she wasn't too bad.

She had her thermos full of God knows what. At the beginning of class she would often tell us what chapter to read, then she would take some pills, take a swig, and fall asleep on her desk.

One time we watch Dr Zhivago, I slept every day that it played. Room was dark, movie was boring...

ANYways on our final exam day, I COMPLETELY BS'ed up some essay about what story I enjoyed most. it was our assignment - write an essay about our favorite story.
I had not studied any of it so I wrote something like -

"In that one story, that one character acted real ironic. She didn;t really love her mom who was pretty mean. And that one guy wasn't there much, especially during that one moment. He went to some city to do something..."
I got a B on it and she wrote "pretty good".

TrashCat · M
@ron122 Because being a true leader is hard 😃
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@ron122 He is not triggering democrats he is threatening countries
Absolutely. He means every ridiculous thing he says he plans to do. People who want to say he’s "joking" are kidding themselves.
swirlie · F
Everything Trump says recently is nothing more than a smoke screen to distract attention away from the fact that his government is in shambles and thousands of government employees are getting laid off or fired on the spot.

This distraction technique Trump has even spoken about in some of his biography novels which date back to the late 1980's.

Don't worry, be happy!
Elessar · 26-30, M
@swirlie lmao, no u!
swirlie · F
@Elessar
You don't understand your own shortcomings, Elessar! I'm trying to help you!
Elessar · 26-30, M
@swirlie No thanks, I'm fine with the head out of the sand
Trump has no coherent politics, that's important. Without logic, everything is on the table. A berzerker has to be crazed.
@Roundandroundwego He don't even has a coherent sphincter, Diaper Donnie
Reason10 · 70-79, M
You might want to start by taking literally what he actually says and NOT what the Nazi left wing media tries to put into his mouth.

Grow some brains. Turn off CNN.
