A tiny drop in the bucket': DOGE claims of fraud fall apart under WaPo scrutiny.

A tiny drop in the bucket': DOGE claims of fraud fall apart under WaPo scrutiny.

Despite claims from Donald Trump, Elon Musk and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has uncovered massive fraud being committed against taxpayers, an analysis by the Washington Post called the assertions all sizzle and no steak.

In an analysis by the WaPo's Aaron Blake, he made a distinction between accusations of criminal fraud –– of which there is little evidence –– and waste which has long been an obsession on both sides of the aisle.

More importantly, he noted that Trump and his allies are conflating fraud with programs the president "simply doesn’t like or agree with."

As he wrote, Musk made a big deal about discovering that a mine is being used to store government paperwork as a example of the yeoman work his DOGE people have been doing –– only for Blake to note "that mine was actually exposed 11 years ago by The Washington Post, in a story called, 'Sinkhole of bureaucracy.'"

As he wrote, "This has been the story of Trump’s broader efforts to overhaul the government: big, hyperbolic claims without much to back them up. Even if you expand the money supposedly being rooted out to include fraud and alleged waste, The Washington Post’s Fact Checker, Glenn Kessler, notes that DOGE has publicly identified 'only about $2 billion in annual savings from specific line items' — a tiny drop in the bucket."

"They seem to be having trouble locating the actual fraud. They keep saying they’ve uncovered fraud. But when pressed for evidence, they don’t seem to have much or any," Blake accused before ending with, "And that’s a problem when you’re using that as your justification for dismantling large portions of the government."

From WaPo:
Trump and Musk can’t seem to locate much evidence of fraud

They keep justifying their bold moves as combating fraud, but they have been unable so far to point to much of anything specific that’s actually fraudulent.

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s efforts to disrupt the U.S. government and hamstring federal agencies are increasingly predicated on the idea that they’re combating fraud. Trump and Musk used that word more than a dozen times in the Oval Office on Tuesday, and the Trump administration keeps citing fraud in defending itself in court.

Is Musk's social security date confusion the biggest DOGE mistake so far? Probably where his "billions" claim comes from.

In the social security data, the DOGE boys encountered a number of dates going back to 1875; thus implying that the people were 150 years old. And, in his unique mixture of arrogance and ignorance Musk assumed this was proof of fraud.

But Musk & the DOGE boys don't understand COBOL. If a date is unknown, many COBOL data sets use a zero to indicate missing data. And because the earliest date that COBOL can represent is May 20, 1875, that zero prints out as May 20, 1875. Importantly, every zero date shows that exact same value of May 20, 1875.

Of course only a few people understand enough about COBOL to know why May 20, 1875 keeps showing up. I certainly didn't know until yesterday.

Here's the funny bit: when Musk & the DOGE boys repeatedly encountered that same mysterious date, did they investigate why it kept showing up?? Did they do any checking?? No, they did not. Instead, they assumed fraud and announced it at a presidential press conference🤣😂😝🤣😂

See what I mean about the unique mixture of arrogance and ignorance???

Isnt it odd that DOGE has not looked at the second biggest item on the expenditure list? They one that has failed 7 previous audits? Defence? It must be just a coincidence that all the departments "reviewed" so far are ones that Musk and his businesses have outstanding legal law suits and condition violations with..😷

It's all to undermine all American institutions in an effort to reshape them to the needs of oligarchy
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
And misrepresenting legitimate government spending as fraud in order to divert it towards funding tax cuts for the wealthy is of course . . fraudulent!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@newjaninev2 Read more carefully, a $25,000 award entitled “Empowering LGBTQIA+ Refugees in Greece” is legitamate spending of American taxpayers noney, right?
@sunsporter1649 Source?? Got any real reporting or just Facebook & Xitter?? Is that the real title, or was it "re-phrased" by 卐LON's crew???

@SunshineGirl Seems 卐LON's crew is basically distorting legal spending and converting it to rage bait. Rage bait is their product.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649 Of course it is legitimate if the source of the funding and the destination are openly and transparently stated and the spending is consistent with the agency's objectives. Whether or not it is an efficient use of taxpayer's money (and whether or not this is an actual item of spending or a figment of Musk's imagination) is quite another matter.
Two weeks ago, several of us predicted the "there's no evidence" narrative. You guys are so lame, it took you this long.

So how come the democrats aren't denying it?

It's all being presented with 0.0 evidence. Why not just say, Elon has invented immortality and Cry-Baby-trump is fit and trim? "The base" will defend it to their death.
@Reason10 Meanwhile, the security at DOGE is so awful their website has already been hacked🤣😂😝🤣😂

DOGE is (in reality) the front office of Trump endorsed shadow government with President Musk in charge

@sunsporter1649 argue the facts

I realise trump's sycophants aren't too keen on those - especially since the pesky things keep exposing trump's lies - they're a necessary part of reality.
Of course I also realise trump's sycophants aren't too keen on reality - it can be annoyingly inconvenient.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 Why are you so desperate to change the subject away from 卐LON's fake claims??

Reason10 · 70-79, M
The far left Wapo? Seriously?

That rag isn't important enough to line a bird cage.
@Reason10 WashPost, over time, broke all the key details of Watergate. You think that was opinions??
