Not really. I always thought that important figures should be taught about regardless of the month. People like MLK and Ruby Bridges should be taught in schools at some point during the year, but they don't need to contain all of the black people in February. They also don't need to only teach about black people in February. It's just such a weird concept.

@BohemianBabe Ideally thatβs the way it should be; however, and I guess I donβt know if Black History Month has any effect on this or not, but I think a lot of schools in the South and rural areas would always do everything possible to avoid or minimize mentioning black people in history if not for Black History Month. But maybe they still do anyway idk. But I kind of suspect thatβs why we have it, to try to make the schools that donβt want to teach black history teach it.

@JPWhoo I think those schools would just ignore Black History Month anyway.

@BohemianBabe Well, but I imagine that maybe thereβs some kind of federal mandate behind it (or there was before Trump rescinded all things DEI)?

@JPWhoo I think it would make more sense to just have a list of figures who must be taught about at some point during the year, which of course would include some black people.
And if schools are ignoring Black History Month, even if it is federally mandated, those same schools would just ignore the black people on the list.

@BohemianBabe Black History month in the UK is in October. Yes, it can seem a bit strange restricting memories to a specific timeframe, but I guess that is what history does with all those dates, anniversaries, etc π
