TARRIFFS...THOUGHTS???

I can see a negative impact on American Consumers.
What solution could be in place as to not cause a terrible impact, food, gas, hardline or softline merchandise?

The proper use of tariffs is to promote local production as opposed to imports. But it seems the gloves are off with this US provocation. And they have violated their own free trade agreements. Canada has a couple of nuclear options in electicity supply and oil. Neither of which have options. and both of which are essential. Just jack up the price,. Say 25%. Then allow the tarrif to be applied and watch both strangle the US economy and send inflation through the roof. (US Crude oil requires the addition of Canadian to be processed for use as gasoline (as you people call it)😷

Canada just caved in and the tariffs are suspended, eventually they will be withdrawn..

@whowasthatmaskedman Neither option is viable. The US gets 10% of Canada's power supply, and I don't understand why you keep thinking we're dependent on Canadian power. Don't google "percentage of US power imports that come from Canada", because the answer: 90% is not meaningful. The US imports only 1% of its electricity.

The oil thing: Canada supplied about 52% of the petroleum and crude oil imported to the United States. But that is not consumed in the US, as oil is a global commodity and US oil concerns sells the Canadian imported oil everywhere. The US does not need to import oil to cover its own consumption.

But Trump voters will be impacted by lumber and other construction supplies and Aluminum among other things (agriculture, etc.).

Trump's bluff failed and the only thing that matters to him, is how MAGA perceives it.

@Onestarlitnight Canada did not cave at all. Most of the measures we already implemented and had on the table. Trump did want to negotiate though. After threats from Mexico and Canada as well as warnings from business sectors in the US Trump caved

@Northwest OK. First the power. There is a critical number that has to generated before a grid fails. If canada withdraws its 10% that number isnt achievable and their will be rolling blackouts. So America has to pay (and frankly knowing Trump paying up front would be wise). And that jacks up the price of electricity. And provides canada with a nice bonus. The Oil is different , but the same. No matter where the oil id shipped and sold. it will be more expensive and have to compete against producers from outside the US..These US refineries will then look for subsidies from the US and again, the Canadians get a nice bonus..😷

@JimboSaturn OK. I am going to have to do my reading here..😷

I don't think you read what I said.

The US buys 1% of its power supply, and 0.9% of that is from Canada.

And the reason it is imported in the first place, is that the companies Canada supplies to are Canadian owned.

For instance, Puget Sound Energy. The company that supplies parts of the Seattle Area, where I live included is Canadian owned. When we got hit by the the cyclone a few weeks ago, and trees fell on my roof, the Canadians sent their trucks/crews to repair the damage.

@Northwest I am confused. But see the difference . 10% of canadian power. Not 10% of US.... It is however concentrated in a few states. Those numbers might look very different, state by state😷

The US has no need to import Canadian power. Sure, Canada has a ton of Hydro power, and so does the US in the US Northwest.

And yes, 0.9% of US power consumption is equal to 10% of Canada's power production.

Shamefully, the reason why US picked Hanford to build the facility that produced one of the bombs that devastated Japan, and after that the bulk of the US nukes cores, is that we had so much hydro power, and incidentally why so many data centers are getting built in my state.

The economies of the State of Washington and Canada are so intertwined, if my Canadian neighbors sneeze, I catch a cold.

@Northwest And stepping back to the big picture. Such cooperation shouild happen automatically. Thats using the resources in the best way..😷
Northwest · M
@whowasthatmaskedman And that's the way it should happen.

I don't blame you if you're confused, because even the MAGAs in my state don't understand what's going on.

When we were out of power for up to a couple of weeks, they were whining and threatening over the BC Power "owning" our power company, and what the hell are all those BC Power trucks doing in our neighborhoods.

@JimboSaturn Canada was very clear what the retaliation would be if he went forward with the tariffs: targeted tariffs on Red States and MAGA. Orange Juice, Bourbon, agricultural products from the Midwest. All focused on Trump's base.

@whowasthatmaskedman Canada has a big advantage with potash too. Potash is a main ingredient in making fertilizers and America imports 80% of its potash from Canada, Cheers and happy weekend!
